The way my high school's curricula operates, basically the first opportunity to take an AP in sophomore year: AP US History. Junior year, most advanced kids take an AP social studies and AP Lang. After that, one's honors courses feed into APs senior year, and one would have room for about five. Here are my total prospected APs (I'm currently a junior):

AP US Hist
AP Euro Hist
AP Lang
AP Calc BC
AP Physics
AP Lit
AP Gov
AP French

(APUSH taken in 10th grade, Euro & Lang in 11th, Calc/Physics/Lit/Gov/French in 12th)

...Would these be enough for a top school such as Harvard? I do well in them.

There is no set number of APs, honors classes, etc. to get into Harvard. 8 APs will certainly be a good base line for you, it will keep you in the running with the other kids. But honestly, 8 APs is pretty common place nowadays among ivy league candidates. From here, you must work to separate yourself from all the other 8-AP kids by excelling in something not so common, something that will make the admissions committee say “wow!”

its fine as long as its the “most rigorous” course offered at your school. Grades and scores will get you past the first round, but ECs you are passionate about are what will set you apart.

My GPA’s a 3.7 UW - definitely on the low side. Scores are good though.

My ECs are yearbook (EIC), varsity forensics, tennis, FIRST robotics, and a couple other clubs. I’m also a very active volunteer, performing relief work in Detroit and being a leader in this as well.

My prospective major is engineering (I’m a girl, so potential mini-hook?), and I’m obviously in Robotics, and many classes I’ve taken reflect this. I’m looking to get an internship at an engineering company or something. I’ve also made friends with my Honors/AP Physics teacher. yet, I’m a good writer, so I’m going to try to emphasize this, and my aptitude in communications (forensics, for those of you who don’t know, is competitive public speaking)

What is enough? There will be people who are admitted who have 8 or more. There will be others admitted less than eight. You must know that the numbers are all contextual.

BTW: there will be people rejected with 8 or more – I’d say the majority, to be frank.

No number of APs can guarantee that you’ll be admitted, just like having no AP does not preclude you from admission either. It depends on what is offered at your high school and the strength of the rest of your application. Several people I know from high school who only took one AP by the end of their junior year were accepted to many of the top universities in the country.

That is pretty much exactly the way AP classes worked at my school (APUSH in 10th, Euro and Lang in 11th, and then you can take 5 more in 12th). So I will have taken 8 in total. I got waitlisted. So sure, it’s certainly not an automatic rejection.

Oh. My unweighted’s low for Harvard standards - ~3.7, including freshman year. It’s like a ~4.2 weighted. It’s actually like most of you people’s if you take out freshman year though (like a 3.9)!

By the way, did you hear Princeton/Stanford doesn’t count freshman grades? If this is the case do I have as solid of a chance as someone who had good grades freshman year in addition to this GPA for sophomore & junior years?
