Hi guys, I am currently attending a college in northeast. It is known for sometimes for its grade deflation. Well, anyway, I have just received a 3.45 GPA in my first semester of college (2A and B and B-) and I'm just wondering whether it's wise for me to transfer this year or to wait and try to bump my GPA up a bit next year. I know that most colleges look at my grades for both semesters this year, but I would like an advise on whether should I waste my time or not on the transferring process.

I'm looking at transferring to some top universities in the east but a little bit below the HYP level.

im trying to transfer to UVA with a 3.1 (but keep in mind, im instate, female, coming from VT (better engineering overall), took 2 math courses, 4.2 senior year...the average for 1st semester at both schools hovers around a 2.9-3.0)
if that gives you any support =P you might as well apply, a 3.45 is not bad for your first semester

I've browsed the boards over and it sounds like 3.7 is around where you want to be if your applying to a competitive transfer program. Though when you say slightly below HYP are you saying Columbia, Brown, Georgetown? Those schools have a lot of transfer applicant, many of whom are top notch students that didn't make the cut the first time around.

Thanks a lot guys. I attend Boston University's College of ENG. SAT score around 1400ish (M + V), ACT 32, high school GPA 3.93/4. Decent recs, but great background. I'm from Vermont but am Asian American (i know that's a disadvantage...)

Well one thing i guess I'll work on is getting better grades next semester. But if (the best case) i get a 4.0 my gpa is still around 3.7ish... I'm looking at (only lookiing at) Brown, Duke, JHU, UC SD or Penn. Not sure my gpa is good for all. So, if anyone would care to give me advice on whether i should even try or not.

I think with your nice HS stats and pretty good board scores (relative to others here) you can overcome the first semester GPA. I have a 3.54 at a less competitive school than you, but am taking a schedule that I will do better in next semester (predicted 3.92). That should average to about a 3.75 which will be good enough with my SATs and ECs.
