Is a Bcom from McGill really prestigious in North America ?

Well, I have been seeking guidance for weeks and I will try to extract the essential facts from what I know and discovered.

The Bcom is not the best course in terms of quality in Canada

McGill is the only canadian university known outside of Canada (huge advantage for international students)

Desaultels (Bcom) mainly benefits from the McGill overall name recognition. (8 Nobel Prizes) That is the most important thing for employment prospects.

I also do know that McGill is quite famous as well as respected in the US.

What would YOU say regarding its reputation in the US/Europe ?
What is the American (Ivy League) equivalent of McGill (esp. Bcom) ?

this one is for you tomofboston

McGill is the Canadian university most known in the US and Europe. I am not sure what you mean by your first point. As for the rest, a McGill B.Com is fully recognized by employers in the U.S.

Most of the top business schools in the U.S. do not offer undergraduate programs. They concentrate on M.B.A. and other graduate degrees. I would place McGill’s B.Com as the equivalent of U. Michigan, USC, NYU, Indiana U. These are leading business schools in the US that do offer undergraduate programs.

Unlike the huge rankings of top universities in the USA, Canada’s most well-known universities are, arguably: Mcgill University, University of Toronto, and (to an extent) University of British Columbia.

It is unreasonable to say that “The Bcom is not the best course in terms of quality in Canada”. In business, success is all about the experience and networking. Mcgill is definitely top in that aspect.

Here’s Desautels Faculty’s employment data:
[Employment data](http://www.mcgill.ca/desautels/career/employers/data/)

I was looking for an actual list of recruiters, but that’s the best I found. Investment Banking and Consulting, for example, are really prestigious career paths that usually only students from top tier schools can reach. I find Mcgill’s career placement to be quite impressive.

Yes is it very prestigious in America. Keep your gpa high, above 3.6 and you’re golden.

Take it from me, alumni of McGill from the Bcom program, I scored interviews with GS, MS, CS. They are big fans.

BCom is a smart choice if you’re being pragmatic. You won’t learn as much as you would in other faculties, but you’re probably not interested in academia anyways if you’re considering a biz degree.

I would caution that the vast majority of McGill Bcom grads do not get offers from bulge bracket investment banks, including those with stellar GPA’s. It’s not Wharton. Again, I’m not being negative, it’s just that some 17 year old kids see these threads and think that if they go to McGill they have a ticket to work at Goldman Sachs.

McGill does place well on Bay Street and has a lot of recruitment from consulting firms.

While some maintain I will have good opportunities (providing I have a high GPA), other believe Mc Gill is not respected in the United States.
But, based on the data for average starting salary, Mc Gill seems a good university (average : $45,000. highest : $95,000). Please note I am not sure I would like to work in Canada, but rather use Mc Gill international overall reputation to study at a top university.
To what extend would you say I will get good professional opportunities with Mc Gill ?

^ pretty sure you are referring to the McGill MBA with those salaries.

Actually, those are approximate B.Com:
[Employment data](http://www.mcgill.ca/desautels/career/employers/data/)

SALARY
Overall Average $42,517
Maximum $92,000
Minimum $25,000
Mean Signing Bonus $3,900
This is what I said regarding the Bcom

hmm, my mistake, i have never seen this. keep in mind these are CDN$, however if i am not mistaken if you notice these figures are two years old, meaning this is what the average is two years out. Some will land great positions straight out, some will have to work their way up a bit for a few years.

Right, but this still means one can get real opportunities with Mc Gill, doesn’t it?

No doubt, I just didn’t want kids to think that a BCom at McGill automatically ensures a $50k job right out of school, regardless of grades, networking and experience.

Another thing to note is that this data only counts those alums that report data back, because there is no raw data, in terms of numbers, we don’t know the percentage of former students that have reported.

This seems quite clear. One has to have a high GPA (+ people skills,…) in order to get an important salary after school.
I guess most of it is due to work and personnal skills (+ relations,…). That’s why there is such a gap between the salaries ($70,000 - Maximum and minimum)
