Is a Bcom from McGill really prestigious in North America ?

Well, I have been seeking guidance for weeks and I will try to extract the essential facts from what I know and discovered.

The Bcom is not the best course in terms of quality in Canada

McGill is the only canadian university known outside of Canada (huge advantage for international students)

Desaultels (Bcom) mainly benefits from the McGill overall name recognition. (8 Nobel Prizes) That is the most important thing for employment prospects.

I also do know that McGill is quite famous as well as respected in the US.

What would YOU say regarding its reputation in the US/Europe ?
What is the American (Ivy League) equivalent of McGill (esp. Bcom) ?

What’s Bcom?

I imagine that McGill’s reputation would only apply in the northeast, in the southwest the only Canadian university I’ve heard of outside of CC is UBC.

McGill is at most equivalent to UMichigan, UVa, UNC, UW-Madison, etc. in terms of career potential in the US.

If you want a career in the US; attend an American school for college. All the Ivy League schools are a few notches above McGill in terms of prestige and international reputation, for the Ivy League has long replaced Oxbridge to become the highest pinnacle for the world’s undergraduate students. Wall Street recruits heavily from the Ivies (especially the top feeders: Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Dartmouth, Columbia, etc. and even student majoring in English literature and art history routinely score offers at Goldman, McKinsey, etc.). BB on Wall Street rarely, if ever, seek undergrads from Canada. From what I’ve seen BB recruits way more from American state schools than from UT and McGill.

No way…you gotta be kidding. McGill > American state school.

Agree that Ivy League schools are a notch above McGill, but getting into BB from McGill is do-able, especially if you’re talking about a BB job in New York, Toronto or London. Something that I was able to do with a decent GPA. Ivy League has not replaced Oxbridge to become the highest pinnacle for undergraduate education, you’d be surprise some people in London have not even heard of Dartmouth.

naff - Getting into BB from McGill is doable, but extremely hard. McGill is no where near Berkeley, Michigan, etc.
And, the Ivy League has replaced Oxbridge in areas of finance and consulting (both about equal in academia). Even LSE is better than Oxbridge in this area. Now a days, only rich international students who can’t qualify for financial aid go to Oxbridge (cheaper due to the fact that undergrads graduate in three years). The tops international students who qualify for financial aid and the top students for whom money isn’t a issue opt for the Ivy League from what I have seen at United World Colleges. If you want to go into investment banking in New York, the Ivy League offers the best tickets.
Many people outside of the United States haven’t heard of Dartmouth, Williams, or even Princeton, but most have heard of Berkeley, Cornell, etc. Name recognition among the general public doesn’t get you offers from BB’s. The alumni networks and prestige of schools among the most elite employers are what sets many top colleges apart from the rest.

I doubt many people outside of Canada has even heard of Bcom from McGill. Canadian schools are just not among the top feeders for investment banking. Only the Ivy League schools, other top American schools, and very few British schools are good for investment banking. It’s much easier for students from Ivies to get offers from investment banks in London than for students from LSE & Oxbridge to get offers from firms in New York. I’ve heard the argument that liberal arts offers an inherently better preparation for investment banking than what the British system offers many times before.

While some maintain I will have good opportunities (providing I have a high GPA), other believe Mc Gill is not respected in the United States.
But, based on the data for average starting salary, Mc Gill seems a good university (average : $45,000. highest : $95,000). Please note I am not sure I would like to work in Canada, but rather use Mc Gill international overall reputation to study at a top university.
To what extend would you say I will get good professional opportunities with Mc Gill ?
