I recently got accepted into the Savannah College of Art and Design and want to study dramatic writing. I loved SCAD because of the connections the school has to companies. The issue is that there aren’t any reviews I can find of the dramatic writing program, as it’s relatively smaller. I can’t even find how alumni from the dramatic writing program are in their careers. Reviews in general are either raving about how incredible SCAD is or claiming that SCAD is just a scam, and I can’t tell which is true. I also am not rich and would have to take out around $200,000 in loans for tuition, room and board, and a meal plan, despite a scholarship from the school. I was really hoping this school could help me become a writer, but now I’m not so sure. Does anyone have any info on how the dramatic writing program is?
You can only borrow ~$5500/year ($27k total), so this school is unaffordable for you. Where else did you apply?
Some people believe in the rule of thumb that says you shouldn’t borrow more for your total undergrad degree than you will make in the first year on the job. People in the dramatic writing business probably start out with pretty low salaries so you should keep that in mind.
Start at a state college. You’ll know more about your educational needs and the financial load you can carry after two years. Transfer. You may loose some credits, but they probably didn’t cost you an arm and a leg either. Plus you will have paid a lot less for the credits that did transfer.
