I am a rising senior at a state university and am currently looking into post-grad options. I am a journalism major with an english minor and always planned on going to law school until very recently. I haven’t ruled out the idea but had a realization due to an internship and a creative writing class that writing is probably the place where my skills are strongest, as well as what I enjoy the most, so I have begun searching around for options more concentrated on that pursuit as well.
All this is to say that I recently found out about SCAD’s graduate writing program and, though I’m tempted to get really excited about it, am pretty unsure of how to feel. I know there’s a lot of controversy (especially on this site) around the undergrad experience at SCAD and haven’t figured out how or if that echoes in the graduate sphere. This program in particular is appealing to me because as much as I love “creative writing,” I’m probably more professionally oriented towards business writing, web content creation, etc and this is the only curriculum I’ve found that includes both but tips more heavily to the latter. I’ve always wanted to go to grad school and have planned for it financially, but a part of me is afraid it will be a waste of money. I’m looking for something that will concentrate and focus my interests/goals through experience and advisement/mentorship, provide a chance to build my portfolio and resume, and give me a competitive edge when I venture into the job market.
So, if anyone has any input, that would be greatly appreciated! I’m familiar with the crime and expense concerns, as a couple of my good friends grew up in the area and one currently lives there (I’m a Georgia resident). Mostly I’m wondering if it is a good program that will benefit me somehow in the future. I am going to visit this summer and talk to the department head but would like to know if anyone has any kind of personal opinion. Thanks and sorry for the lengthiness, figured more context was hopefully better than less
