Is a great grandparent a type of grandparent?

Under the Family section of the common app, it asks if a parent, stepparent, legal guardian, grandparent, or sibling has attended the university.
My great-grandfather was an important, notable alumnus, can he count as a “grandparent” in this instance? He has a common last name, which I don’t share (he was on my mother’s side), so I’m not sure the admissions committee would know unless I indicated it on the application.

Depends if Michael Bloomberg a good thing if Alger Hiss not so much. Both JHU notable alum. Just kidding.

JHU does not consider legacy. But I believe they are defining grandparents as the parents of your parents.

No.

And, as @skieurope pointed out, JHU doesn’t count legacy.

Nice try.

Let’s see:
Is my grandparent a type of parent?
Is my cousin a type of uncle?

Definition of grandparent (per Merriam Webster Dictionary) - a parent of one’s father or mother

So no.
