I want to major in International Business and concentrate in Finance, but my research says this degree won’t look appealing when applying to jobs. I plan on attending Howard University in the fall and they have an excellent Business school. I am interested in IB because I am intrigued by the opportunity to discover different cultures and the ability to travel. My ultimate career goal is to become a corporate lawyer and specialize in corporate law. Any advice if I should keep this major or find something else?
The great thing is that you don’t have to make this decision today. Go to college, and start taking the courses you find interesting. Take an IB class. Take a Finance class. Definitely take a language class. You don’t have to make a final decision for another year or more.
Take classes that push your thinking and communication skills- ones that expect you to read a lot and do a lot of critical thinking. If that is not already easy for you, go to the writing center on the very first day and make best friends with them. There is absolutely genuinely nothing that you can do in college that will help you more for a life in IB OR law than be able to shape a clear, strong, articulate message, both in writing and orally.
Also, look into study abroad early, so you can plan your time (often you can do more than one).
