Is a minor worth it?

I'm gonna be an engineering major in the fall, and I was just browsing through the minors offered, and I noticed that I'd only be a few classes away from getting a math or physics minor. Is it worth it to get a minor in something so related to my major? Or should I expand to something different (i.e. business)?

Well, you can’t minor in business. You can take a certain amount of business courses that normally amount in number to a minor in most departments, but you can’t officially receive a minor. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to have a minor or two in math or physics. If nothing else, it shows you can handle a greater workload and have a deeper interest in certain areas.

I meant something business related… so like econ.

Oh. Well if it were between econ and physics/math, I might choose econ because it shows a little more diversity (that is, of course, if you aren’t doing IOE, in which case it won’t show as much diversity).

yeah i’m undecided as of now. I’m thinking either mech, aero, or IOE.

If you’re doing mech or aero, I would probably go for an econ minor (diversity argument). If you’re doing IOE, I would probably go for a math/physics minor. IOE is jokingly nicknamed IOEasy. If you show that you can do a math/physics minor and get good grades in general, you can help to refute that nickname.

the math/physics isn’t a problem, which is why i was thinking mech/aero. but i also get a little more interested in IOE every time i read about it.

Oh yea, I was by no means trying to personally knock IOE. I think it’s very interesting, and if I were an engineering major I would probably choose IOE myself (I’m and econ and math major). It just so happens that it is referred to as IOEasy, because the material is apparently easier than other engineering tracks. That is not to say that it’s not a worthwhile degree, because I think it would be.

If I remember correctly, a minor in math is 3 extra math classes and physics minor is 2 extra classes. But a lot of engineering people pick these up, so it doesn’t mean too much. I recommend you minor in something you think is interesting!
