Hey everyone, so I have been accepted to Ohio State and I’m really excited. I have always wanted to go into Journalism, however lately, and I’m sure this will happen again, I have been rethinking what I really want to do. I have always had an interest in government and politics, not necessarily international relations and such, and also writing and reporting. If I wanted to pursue a career in becoming a political reporter, perhaps a news anchor, would a degree in political science be enough to get me there? Is it worth it to major in this if I don’t think I’ll attend law school? I want to get the most out of my college experience at Ohio State and I want to challenge myself- not sure if a major in Journalism will do that entirely, not to undermine the field. How good is Ohio State’s political science program is what I’m basically asking? Thanks in advance!

I’m not a political science major, but I did some googling, and it appears that a) it is difficult to find a list of best ranked undergraduate programs in political science, and b) where I did find rankings, considerably more prestigious private universities were on those lists, rather than any public universities. That is not to say that OSU’s program is bad, but it does not appear to be especially well-regarded nationally.

Recent political science grads nationally have a fairly high unemployment rate (9.1% according to the recent Georgetown report on college majors, unemployment, and earnings) and a fairly low average starting salary (35k), if you are interested in that aspect of the major.

Poli Sci: is an important field but one that usually takes a Masters to break into. It sounds like you want more of a journalist/broadcast journalist thing, which is quite a bit different.
