I recently gave the SAT in May and got a score of 1660 . This is a big blow to my Self Esteem as I deem myself much better than this . I’ve been depressed ; I’ve even got suicidal thoughts . I got 580 in maths , and that so bad for me , because i never got less than seven hundred in Maths at home . I literally want to leave the world rightnow . I had been preparing for almost 3 months now … I memorized such difficult words … Did Maths sections and nlah nlah wat so ever . Nut my friends who didn’t even started for it just 2 weeks ago , got like 2000 or 2`30.
My question here is that can I achieve a Sat Score high enough to get me a scholarship in the US ? I have summer vacation from June to August and i will apply later that year . I am not a weak student , infact , i got Straight A stars in my Recent Alevel School Exams . I am willing to study to 24 hours out of the 24 hours each day … I am willing to do anything , I MEAN ANYTHING !!! I am so obsessed right now …
I just want to know if effort can make me reach there , where i want to go . Or is it that only intrinsic ability can get someone scores like that ? I am willing to spend my all for that
First of all calm down. I think that’s the motivation you will need to have to get your goal. Don’t give up. Study hard and Practice each day will help you to increase your score. Get the Blue Book, if you don’t have it. This test doesn’t measure your capacities but it can close a lot of doors.
Calm down, first and foremost take a big deep breath and then do your planning. Leaving this world will not fix your sat score.
Now, and after you take a chill pill, get the blue book, don’t do the first three exams (these are for later and at the end of your prep), and do one practice test to see where you stand. Then after you review it see where are you most weaknesses. Maybe you need to study prefixes or maybe you forgot about parallelism in a sentence…take notes of your errors. Get some books specifically for the topics where you find your weaknesses. Some people prefer to start with its strongest subject. Maybe you got a better score in writing than in math. Seeing your score improving keeps you motivated.
Also, and the most important thing, take your practice tests under real test conditions, time yourself and don’t take too much breaks between sections. In addition, don’t rush through practices because you need to be careful with the use of material. There is plenty material but if you misused you will run out of good material. Spend time reviewing your mistakes, your guesses and your correct ones. Before you jump to another test, see why you miss a question and try to find different solutions (like for example in math).
Maybe you can go and check out the pinned topic about good sat books on cc, you can get good reviews of some books.
But most importantly about studying for the sat is to stick with colelgeboad material (blue book, past QAS, past psat tests) , so do yourself a favor a don’t do those hard-core made up problems that you may find on books that are not college board related.
If you are suicidal, please seek help from a mental health professional immediately. If you are feeling suicidal as the result of a test, then you may be a high risk student as far as admissions to schools in the US thousands of miles away from your home. The reality is that English as a second language can impact the outcomes on math scores. All you can do is study hard and do the best that you can. If you can’t get to a US college right out of high school, you can start at a university in your own country.
Northernmom61 I was just exaggeraing my feelings . And no , i am not depressed due to just a test . There are mang other things that have not exactly depressed me , but made me unhappy about the outcome of what we all do . Dont worry i am a philosopher , and philosophers are supposed to be sad . Chillax , i am not gonna kill myself , not due to this anyways. You are a mom , you should know that people do not just abandon their dreams like that.
Paoloppod Thanks for encouraging me man !! But unfortunately i’ve wasted the bluebook . I didnt know that the first 3 were the best 3 and i should do them at last . I did 7/10 of the tests in the blue book and the bad thing is that i did all of them casually. I didnt time them , nor did them seriously . I`ve got this raging fire in me and i think this will make me get a 2300 or above . Tell me how should i proceed ?
For Grammar, check out Erica Meltzer’s Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar
For Math, check out Pwn Sat Math
For Reading, check out the SAT Black book.
I found them really helpful.
Well, if you already did 7/10 of the blue book, go back and check in which subject you struggle most I mean maybe geometry or algebra. Be very careful of checking your errors because it is not that you see an error and say oh I misread it or I can do this during the test. Nope no excuses, if you miss one then go and review it. Go and check crack sat net is a good website. Print those tests but don’t rush it. If you really need to build up your vocabulary , go and check some lists there are some words that actually repeat.
So, yeah good luck, I believe you can do better.
I usually don’t make mistakes on Sat math … I usually get 1 or 2 questions wrong in one sat. . i don’t know what happened to me. … :/…
The problem is critical reading… I remember that the invigilator said 5 minutes remaining. And j had just opened my 2 lengthy passages comparison …
Did you take your practice tests on the same conditions as the real one?
Thats the problem , I didnt … And I got the score report today . i made 2 difficult questions wrong and 8 easy questions wrong
I just did easy questions wrong …
Also , My critical readings says that i didnt attempt 15 question , 6 easy 7 medium , 2 hard . I remember correctly that in the passage in which we have to compare 2 long passages , When i turned the page to look at the 2 passages , i had only 5 minutes remaining . I solved the questions , and frantically added them on to my answer sheet .
But my score report says i omitted those questions . Now i am sure that i did mark them in my answer sheet . But i think there is a 1 % Chance maybe i put them in wrong section due to stress . But i also think thats unlikely . But 1 thing i am sure of , is that I didnt omit even 1 question and put them all in answer sheet
Yeah, that was a big mistake. You must always need to take the test like that. I think doing one test on Saturday at the same time as the real one will make you prepare for that big stress.
SAT Black Book ? Which one is that ?
Thanks …
Guys Thank you all for your replies. But sadly none of you have replied to my actual question .
Please Its a Yes or No question . Is a 2300 achieveable . If by any earthly chance it is , I will get it , and believe me I will . When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe , you succeed . Just please answer it !
Only you know what you are capable to do. Some can say yes and others can say no. It’s so difficult to get that score. Try your best!
Okay I’ve taken a covenant . From this day on , the purpose of my existance is to ace SAT, and show it to others that I can do it .
Just you wait … I am giving SAT in October. I live and breathe SAT now .
Thanks for the motivation. I will post the good news here when I get it .
Ok @Hassnain360 I am going to pretend you are my kid. Here is how I got one of my kids prepped. Fasten your seatbelt and be ready to work. Also note the SAT is changing Spring 2016, so the comments below (cut and pasted from another thread of mine) apply only to the current “old” SAT format:
"I am convinced that anyone with at least average intelligence and a strong work ethic can achieve a score of 2250+ through practice and brute force.
Here’s what worked for my D:
In a nutshell, here’s what I did (mainly culled from reading many posts here on CC):
- I bought the SAT blue book with 10 actual old SAT’s and had her do at least 2 sections a week (either 1 math and 1 critical reading OR 1 math and 1 writing section) on weekends during school and at least 1 test a week (2 sections a day - timed) during spring and summer breaks. When I ran out of tests there, I subscribed to 10 more actual tests at the SAT online review course. Don’t do any fake tests (princeton review, etc) - they are worthless.
 - I got an iphone Vocab app called Knowji levels 9-10 and had her go through the words a couple of times in the months leading up to the test
 - Repeat: Practicing with ACTUAL old tests is the key.
 - I had her read Erica Meltzer’s Grammar book over the summer - she got perfect 80/800 on both PSAT/SAT writing sections mainly because of this book. For the SAT essay, I just had her read “writing a 12 essay” a couple of times and had her do just 2 practice essays (SAT sec 1) the month before the test (not worth wasting too much time on this IMHO since Grammar knowledge is king >> Essay, and no essay on the PSAT- at least not the pre-2016 PSAT).
 - I got the Keller’s New Math SAT Game Plan and had her read that over summer. It seems to me that math is the least forgiving because if you miss two or three questions you are already in the lower 70’s/700’s. Keller wrote a great section about the back door method which I think was a very valuable tip. This book is a hidden gem.
 - For Reading, which IMHO is the hardest section to raise one’s score on, I relied on 2 books:
Over spring break, I had her read through Kreiger’s Critical Reading Book and did one chapter per day out of a pink book called Feinstein’s Programmed College Vocabulary (a thin & expensive but worthwhile book - I found this book myself through Amazon searches and went out on a limb and had her read it - I think it helped). After that it was pretty much doing practice CR sections from old SAT’s.
Hope this helps. With the new changes in the PSAT/SAT I am not sure what we can expect.
Obviously, getting new materials that will simulate the new PSAT/SAT to practice on may be the biggest challenge 2016 test takers face - so much of what we did to prep will likely no longer apply to next year.
Also, before you accuse me of being an overbearing dad, my daughter asked me to help make her a study plan. She was a good sport about it and had a good attitude, and fortunately her hard work paid off."
Now, Hassan - get to it.
Allahu Akbar, Namaste, etc etc.
And good luck.
Let me know if it worked. It has so far, but I only have a sample size of n=2 to prove it!

@Nerdyparent Thank you very much for the advice … I will seriously follow the schedule you gave me , and make that ’ n ’ = 3 . I will for sure get to it . I hope my hard work pays off too. Thank you So much .
Lol I loved that Allahu Akbar thing!? :)) In fact we Muslims only send peace . So peace on to you. I will get back to you when I finally get 2250+ . By the way how much did your daughter score ??
dude take life easily… a 1660 is not bad by any means, in egypt one can be considered a god if he gets that score!
cheer up man and be happy!
