current school: University of Vermont, second semester freshman
GPA: 3.73
courseload: five courses first semester, two intermediate level, three intro, five courses this semester, two intermediate, one senior seminar, two intro
SATS: 2100 (740 cr, 730 writing and 630 math) 780 writing SAT 2, 720 lit and ugh, 620, US History, somehow
major: poli sci
ECs: Intern for Sen. Leahy twelve hours a week (only freshman or sophmore ever to intern, woot woot) co-president of college democrats, member of my school’s STAND chapter. Did research for history prof at WUSTL over the summer, hostessed 20 hours/week, interned at the ACLU, taught theatre.
essays: major strength, my how did you come to hear of barnard essay is just well written and well reasoned, although not groundbreaking, my character from a book, movie, play or tv show who taught me something essay was a character from an arthur miller play called the ride down mt. morgan, my working for an organization essay was about the center for preventive action at the council on foreign relations (in nyc) and my course I would teach is entitled “The Importance of the Kennedys on the American Story.” My big “Why Barnard” essay is written in the form of a love letter, and also well written. I actually signed my name at the end, and compared UVM to a bad relationship and told Barnard why I thought it would be better, talking about all the things a good partner does, encourages you to be independent, encourages you to challenge yourself, etc.
recs: i’ve read one, my prof called me one of the smartest people he’s met in his 40 years of teaching at UVM and UPenn, my other two, one of the profs said i was intellectually in the top one percent of ppl he’d taught, and the other prof said i was ‘wonderfully engaged’
high school: this is what i think might keep me out, 3.34 GPA from a top private prep school in St. Louis with an upward trend culminating in a 4.0 second semester senior year. i wrote an explanation, but i feel as though they might just think that one semester isn’t enough time for me to prove myself.
i also think the fact that i didn’t take math senior year might keep me out, i took two history classes instead.
Barnard also asks for midterms.
Here they are, with comments my teachers wrote
English 198 (Readings and Research) A+ (4.0, same as an A) Fine Work!
Political Science 259 (Senior Seminar) A-/A. An exceptional student.
Stats 51 A-
and then, eesh
Poli Sci 21 B- Very smart, hardworking student, has trouble with short answer exams (makes it sound like i have trouble with all short answer tests, gah)
History 174 (intermediate level) B/B+ Student got an A last semester in first half of course, I expect no less this semester.

I hope that if I had a shot it isn’t ruined by these last two midterm grades because it seems too much like high school, where I was a B, and early on (9th and 10th grade) sometimes a C student.

Any evaluation or thoughts would be much appreciated. I was at Barnard visiting a friend at Columbia this past weekend and it just felt so right to be on campus, listening to so many women on campus there, they all seemed so smart and so interested in the wider world and ready to explore it and ach… I want to go to school there so badly.
