I’m currently majoring in International Studies, History, and Sociology with a minor in Urban Studies. I was dual-enrolled in high school junior and senior year and came to Iowa State with a lot of credits, and these majors tie together very well, so it is very possible to do this. I’m a freshman but a credit junior in the honors program with a GPA of 3.77. Is what I’m doing now helpful for a strong career or am I just wasting my time? A friend mentioned that I should just pick a major and be done in two years and go to grad school if I wanted the extra edge.
Thing is though, I’m not quite sure what I want to do after I graduate. Either law, Public Relations, Public advocacy, Community Planning, Non-profit management, Entrepreneurial ventures, etc. What I’m studying currently gives me a good interdisciplinary education that I think might help me in these areas. I don’t know though, are these majors actually beneficial in achieving the kinds of things I’m saying?
@TheGuiltyBunny Have you spoken with your advisor about your options? What does he/she say?
My son’s roommate is a freshman with junior credit standing. He is in engineering, so diff program, but his advisor told him it would be too difficult to graduate early - he would have to take too many high level classes at the same time in order to finish early. He plans on taking 3 1/2 years plus 1 semester abroad.
Based on your career interests, it looks like you could perhaps at least drop the history major…
Make an appt. with your advisor.
I can easily graduate within four years with those majors and a minor. I’ve already discussed with my advisor and it’s possible to do what I’m doing, but I was curious about what other people might think I should do and if these majors are beneficial. The history major is appealing to keep because it lets me pursue a social studies teacher license after graduation if that’s actually what I decide to do.
Can’t you become a Social studies teacher without the major? If you find all of them interesting I would keep them if it not to much extra work.
