Is Abercrombie etc. "banned" at prep schools?

I've been scrolling through the forums to see what people wear at prep school, and it's interesting that in some threads, Abercrombie, Hollister etc. is all that is popular at school, whereas in other threads, people absolutely hate Abercrombie and other mall stores and instead only wear J. Crew, Ralph Lauren etc. I'm kind of confused, curious, and worried. I have some Abercrombie in my wardrobe, and I'm wondering if I'm not supposed to bring any of it to school. I've been wearing uniform to school since I started it, and I'm also an international student, so I have no idea what I should get. Any advice?

Usually those threads are telling the most popular type if clothing. Brand doesn’t really matter as long as you’re in dress code. However, if you don’t feel comfortable wearing it at boarding school, by all means wear some other brands.
What I’m bringing to school:
-5 or 6 blazers(different colors)
-lots of dresses

  • flats
    -heels
-1 or 2 special occasion dresses
    -pants
    -lots of blouses
    -1 or 2 cardigans
-jeans, sweats, and athletic wear for after school
    -casual shoes(converse, nike, etc)
    -shorts

Before I say anything else, I agree that you can wear whatever you want, and no one but the saddest, most insecure kids will say anything about it, and even they probably won’t say it to your face. The only counter example I have is this: a kid wore a sweater with a picture of a squirrel that had an actual fur squirrel tail attached to it, and that was mocked. No one I know (not even the mean kids) would say anything about a regular outfit. And frankly, only the mean kids sneered at the squirrel tail.

Yes, there will be what seems like a lot of kids who only wear Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vine, Lilly Pulitzer, J. Crew, or designer stuff, but to them it’s just normal clothes, and they are just as worried about fitting in as most everyone else. Here, on an anonymous forum, some have decried “mall clothes” as trashy. (I think that opinion was largely pushed by a particularly horrifying parent. Many kids do wear normal mall brands.) But would a kid actually say anything if a new friend showed up in an Ambercrombie shirt? I really doubt it. At my school, everyone wants to find friends and fit in. It may seem easier for those who are walking in with obvious advantages (they are local, they are rich, they are smart and athletic) but I spend as much time talking to these types about their fears of not fitting in as anyone. If you can, look up Facebook or You Tube videos to see examples of what kids wear. Kids here will help too. No matter what, relax and remember that every single kid you see on campus has moments of worrying about their clothes. Just don’t let it take up too much of your time and energy–you’ve got a whole new school to conquer!

I wouldn’t think so as long as you don’t wear their sweat pants to class (I’m pretty sure thats against dress code in almost every school)
