Should I change up my wardrobe?

Hi.

I'm a girl who grew up on the East Coast and just got accepted to an East Coast boarding school. I've been scrolling through posts, about what to bring, and some people said they HATE Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines, Lilly Pulitzer, J.Crew, etc, which is about all I ever wear, with an occasional Abercrombie, Hollister, and AE (yes, I'm a bit preppy). This is simply because I grew up wearing these clothes, and all my family members do as well. Will I get teased for wearing them? I'm asking, because as mentioned above, somepeople outrightedly stated that they can't stand the clothes I wear on other treads. Based on this, I just wanted to ask, should I change my wardrobe completely?

I definitely don’t think you should change your wardrobe completely. Don’t change what you like for other people. That being said, if you feel like some things you wear wouldn’t be appropriate for boarding school, by all means change those. I know I’ll have to buy some nicer things.
Though, as a fair warning, some people might think you’re snotty from those clothes. So if you want to change some things, go ahead, but it seems like a waste to change everything that you like in favor of things you don’t like as much for other people.

I’d say wear what you want. If kids are going to judge you by your clothes you won’t want to be their friend anyway.

That’s exactly what I wear, don’t you worry. If people dislike me for a wardrobe choice then they’re not the type of people I want to hang out with. I wouldn’t worry though, I think it’s still a common style at BS

you can always check out this list of fashion blogs from the exeter dress code: http://theexeterdresscode.■■■■■■■■■■/faq</a></p>

Thanks  I was just worried, because so many other said they don’t exactly love the brands I usually wear…

Defenitly wear what you want!

would’ve hated them when I was in high school because my family couldn’t even have afforded even a pair of socks from most of those brands. Sad to say, but sometimes those of us who grew up without a lot of money get jealous of those with it. But those brands are practically all you see at my school. I had no clue what Lily Pulitzer or Vineyard Vines were until I started living at a boarding school. Wear the stuff you love, and don’t worry–you will not be alone in those clothes!

What size do you wear? Could you just donate them to me and buy new clothes? :)

I would wear what you want. Check out tumblr, cause I know that there are a couple of east coast prep schools that take pictures of random students and post their outfits.

@stargirl3 I’m a size 2, but I doubt my parents will let me. What school are you going to?

@bonjourhello A 2 wouldn’t fit me anyway… tall and broad? Yup! I’m on a billion waitlists, so about school, we’ll see… :)

I’m a tall and well tall… :-/ Same here, but I got into Deerfield! My dream school is Exeter (I got waitlisted. Guess we just have to wait and see), but if I don’t get in, Deerfield it is for me then… It was my second choice though, so I’m happy :)

@bonjourhello, if you end up at exeter I expect clothes sharing priveleges  sounds like we are style soul mates

@exeter bunny hahaha sure, but i have to get in first, which probably isn’t going to happend  But I’m still happy, because Deerfield was at the top of my list as well.

I mean, Deerfield has a pretty preppy dress code to begin with.

Bonjourhello, you sound exactly like me! My wardrobe consists mostly of J. Crew (I graduated from CrewCuts so yipee), Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines, and Abercrombie, Hollister, AE, etc. Don’t change up your style because it’s YOU and fashion is a form of self expression. If that’s what you like, so be it. No one can do anything about it.

@stargirl3 true, you hav a point

@swimmergirl3 yeah, I suppose you are right. I’m just a bit worried and nervous I guess.

Don’t buy too much new stuff. Suggest you start school and get a sense of what other kids normally wear, then supplement a month later during Fall Parents Weekend, or via mail order.

Wouldn’t hurt to buy a few items during the summer via mail order, so you can benchmark for size/fit. That way you know what size to order in the future.

We bought way too much new stuff for GMTson when he started, and a lot of it he refused to wear, like linen shirts and turtlenecks. Goodwill ended up getting a lot of nice new stuff w the tags still on it.

@GMTplus7 That was what my mother suggested I do, but I am just so excited, and want to go back-to-school shopping already (of course, I am a girl, so…)!! Plus, we won’t be here for the summer, as we are going on vacation, and then India, so I am a bit worried it would be too much to buy (the supplies, suitcases, clothes, etc) in the one to two weeks we will have left once coming back, which is why I am looking at what to buy right now. :)
