Is all hope lost?

I’m going into sophomore year with pretty much no extracurriculars or clubs in freshman year except track. Nothing much in summer since I was studying for the SAT. I have a 5.5/6.0 gpa for freshmen year with all A’s except a B+ in honors geometry. Do I still have any chance for Ivy League colleges even though I didn’t do pretty much any extracurricular or clubs and my grade is eh for freshman year

You are a rising sophomore, right? Seems like a good time to start pursuing activities that interest you, Ivy or no Ivy. Keep studying, but find time for for other things.

Do I still have a chance at ivies if I do extracurriculars now though because I know a lot of freshman do lots of extracurriculars. Also I can’t seem to find my interests

It’s hard to get stared, for sure. Maybe try a couple of clubs at school or look for some volunteer opportunities. Online courses? Do you like to read? Maybe join or start a student book club or volunteer at the library. Do you have an idea what you might major in?

I don’t think chance threads are anything more than guessing. Your chance at an ivy is whatever their acceptance rate is.

Colleges love consistency and when you’re talking about an Ivy League school the look out for passionate and dedicated students rises just that much higher. I would say that it was a mistake not getting involved earlier, however, this doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. I would recommend getting involved in one thing or one subject, like HOSA or DECA. But I would advise against diversifying. If you have an interest pursue it to its max. Start doing stuff outside of school Get recognized by your community etc. This is the kind of thing Ivy League Colleges are looking out for. From personal experience getting a B isn’t the best thing for your application. If it was AP chemistry then perhaps it wouldn’t be too detrimental but understand that there are thousands of other students applying to these schools with A+'s in AP Chemistry and A’s all across the board. This means that you are already below average. I don’t want to be too harsh but if applying to a school like Stanford or MIT takes preparation before high school if you really want a good chance at admission. These guys are looking for the most elite and the most dedicated students who have a burning passion about what they love and if they fail to see that then your chances drop. Obviously other factors come in like your ACT/SAT score etc. You’re really going to need to kick it into gear your Junior and Senior year. I may sound rather hyperbolic but if you want to have a really good chance at any of these schools you’re going to need to be packing a pretty swell resume. Don’t get involved, get immersed in doing what you love and act on that to reflect on that passion. These colleges want leadership, dedication, and intelligence. Make sure that they see that you have these traits and make sure you show them that you’re serious about getting into their school.
