I definitely got enough on my Calc AB exam to exempt 408K. At my counselor's recommendation, I am going to stick to finishing the Calc series in 2 semesters, even if I got the 5.

I can't decide if I want to take 408L this semester and 408M the next, or 408C then 408D. 408L seems more ideal since it'd be slower paced; however, the only class that fits with my schedule (I joined a FIG) is an 8am class and I am not a morning person at all. In addition, I don't know the professor yet. The 408C class that I am considering does have a pretty good professor assigned, and it's at an ideal time. However, I am worried that taking 408D the semester after would be much too fast-paced and difficult after taking the slow-paced AB course in high school and reviewing with 408C.

Is taking an 8am class really that bad?

i havent had UT classes yet but…I have have 730am and 8am classes at ACC

and…all I have to say is…if you’re determined to make an A you’ll make it happen.

I think you’ll have a MUCH easier time L/M compared to C/D

because calc 2 is the hardest calc

Sequences and series will kick your butt. trust me I almost didnt make an A in it.

multivariable is easy
…imagine having those 2 jammed into one semester

why do it if you don’t have to?

Just drink coffee in the morning and sleep earlier. in the end your grades will be better and it will be worth it. It’s only for one semester, you can find a 408M that is later in the day next semester.

I’m sure it wont be your last 8am class that you’ll have…eventually you’ll need an 8am class

I would never base what classes to take on how early or late it is. If the professor is good and I need the class…I’ll take it but thats my opinion.

I think you’ll be fine in C/D it does move faster but you should manage if you study hard. Like I said…why do it if you don’t have? Wake up early and take the L/M route.
It’s not that bad after a week you’ll get used to it. You might actually start enjoying mornings because you’re actually awake early enough to have breakfast. I used to never have time for breakfast or I’d be waking up at lunchtime.

How much calculus do you have to take? Or can I ask what your major is?

I thought I wasn’t a morning person before I started college. I took M 408C at 8am (had to cause of scheduling) and did great. This doesn’t mean you will do great but there are certain things you can do as the above poster mentioned to help cope with the fact that it’s at 8 am. I also took M 408D to finish and would say that sequences and series gave people the most trouble. Heading into college, I also passed the Calc AB exam. I did not take Calc BC in high school though.

More or less:

M 408C + M 408D = Calc 1, 2, and 3.
M 408K, M 408L + M 408M = Calc 1, 2, and 3.

This is why M 408C and D is much faster pace. My friend started off at M 408C and finished it but didn’t like the pace. He then took M 408L (the first half was stuff he already did in M 408C) and that satisfied all of the math that he needed. You might need to have either M408 D or M 408M completed to satisfy your math depending on your major, though.

You are going to likely have to take 8 am classes at some point while in college. M 408L starts off with a bunch of integrals and then it gets into sequences and series. If you passed the Calc AB exam then you should be better off for the integral portion and maybe by the time that it gets into things that you didn’t cover in high school, you will have gotten used to being in class at 8 am by then.

I personally was okay with 8 am classes because it freed up the remainder of my day a little better. When I had days where I started class at 11 am, I would sometimes feel like I wake up and then have no free time the remainder of the day.

I’d say take L/M. I exempted K with credit from the AB test and took L my first semester. The time of the class just depends on how easy it is for you to wake up in the morning after (most likely) going to sleep at midnight or later the night before. Also, if you plan on going out on Thursday nights, and you have an 8 am class on Friday you probably won’t make it. The good thing about Calculus classes is that they usually do not take attendance in the lectures. So if you do happen to miss a few morning classes, find other lecture times for the same class even if it’s with a different professor. Go to these so that you will not miss any of the material.

Thanks so much! The general consensus seems to be take the L/M route. I’m in engineering, so I definitely have to take all 3 Calcs - plus more.
Thanks for all your help; I mean, in high school I’d go to sleep around midnight and wake up at 6am, so hopefully it won’t be too bad. Thankfully the 8am is only Mon and Wed, but the 408C timings are still much more ideal - besides being able to wake up later, it fits in nicely in between my other classes so I don’t have too many awkward 1-2 hour gaps. Still, it’s only 2 days a week for 1 semester, and I can definitely deal if it means an easier courseload.

Thanks again.
