8am math class vs 2pm class? Help!

When I originally signed up for my classes back in March I chose a 2pm math lecture. After going on Ratemyprofessor I realized it was the perfect fit for me because the professor seemed GREAT. However, a few weeks ago I looked and my professor had changed to a new guy who is apparently a HORRIBLE professor (my friend had him and she said she didn't learn anything). He took over only the 2pm lecture slots, and the only other choice is an 8am MWF lecture. I am currently enrolled in the 8am class because I want a better professor.

Is this a good decision?

On the RMP rating scale the 2pm guy is rated as a 2.1/5 and the 8am person is rated 3.7/5. (My old professor was a 4.8! ): )

I think if the teacher is better, the time shouldn’t matter. I took a 8am MWF class and it was a large class (80 people) and one morning 5 of us showed up. It was really nice because than I got to learn the people who really cared were there. I would go for it!

Thanks for your input! Its nice hearing that other people survived a larger 8am class. I guess I’m just worried about not waking up in time for class. xD Did you notice a pattern at all as far as attendance goes? As of right now I assume Friday classes would be emptier because of ‘Thirsty Thursday’ (not that I’ll be participating).

I personally could see myself getting up for an 8am class if:

 • I like the class enough to be motivated to go, and
 • if my roommate let me sleep at a reasonable time

In fact, I noticed that I am getting much more work done if I get up early. (Since I am not productive past 10pm, regardless of when I got up.) For a couple semesters I forced myself to get up early by signing up for 8am library shifts or 7am PE classes.

Ugh. I couldn’t survive an 8 a.m. math class. Heck, I don’t think I’d do well with any class at 8 a.m. Had one once, and talked myself out of going to it soooo many times. Still got an A, thankfully.
You should definitely decide a class based on a professor. As I have found with math, I understand it better with certain ones, and others are horrendous.
I’m really annoyed this year, because I used the rate my professor for my calc 2 class options. There were only 2 professors teaching it this upcoming fall semester. One that EVERYONE tells us to avoid (not just on the site, others in my major have warned us), that she doesn’t teach it well and most end up failing. And the other one got better reviews. I signed up for a time with the better one… checked my schedule this past month just to check up on something, and saw that they switched it so the horrible professor is now teaching that time. And nothing I can do to change it.

2pm is siesta time, so you may have a harder time staying awake, compared to 8am, assuming you woke up in the first place to get to class by 8am.

8 AMs are NOT as bad as people say they are. I am anything but a morning person but I’ve had a few 8 AMs. You deal with it. You’re going to be working that early once you graduate so you just do what you have to do.

Go with the 8 AMs. I promise you’ll survive the semester.

how early would you have to get up for the 8 am? in my experience its harder to stay awake at two pm than 8 am, that is if you wake up at 6 or later. In my opinion, it isnt that early.
