Is anyone on CC a national spelling bee participant/champion?

In fifth grade I spelled slimy wrong. I’ll never forget it. why would slimy be a spelling bee word anyway??

I got knocked out because I said “bare skin” instead of “bearskin.” After that they asked cockroach (which I knew how to spell), and everyone in the room who was left got it wrong. I’m bitter about it to this day, and I wish I’d made an appeal (how was I supposed to know which definition they meant?).

I made it to the regional finals twice (semifinals three times); I never went to Nationals. I just went for the fun of it, but a lot of the others there were really intense…they would study Webster/medical dictionaries during breaks. I admire any kid who has the dedication to commit to something like that.

I love how everyone remembers the words he/she got wrong…mine were:

5th grade: mezzanine (totally messed it up)

6th grade: xanthocroid (SO CLOSE…I misheard it and spelled it xanthRocroid…arrghhh)

I was serious, though. Anyone that’s read the Asterix series could you exactly what a menhir is and spell it right easily (funny how it’s not in the Firefox dictionary). See the picture below.

I never made it.

I’ve always hated learning how to spell. I’m decent now, but not good by any means.

I only made it to state. Got to about the 8th round and got out. Don’t remember the word though. It was a long time ago…

I won in 6th grade.

Lol. I wish. I think I mis-spelled chauffeur?

I got out in the first round in 4th grade…on the word barber

i spelled alibi incorrectly at a district bee. lol

“patern” - 6th grade.

My friend’s younger brother was just in this past one. He got through the first two rounds, but he messed up on the written test to go into semifinals. He was 4 points away. He’s not even one of the uber-competitive types who writes on their hands

I won my like school division in 5th grade and got knocked out at Districts :/

I got 2nd place at my 6th grade spelling bee. I probably could have gotten first, but I realized that I was either going to get 1st or second and I freaked out. (I don’t win things often, I guess…)

The word was preprocedure. I put a ‘Q’ in there somehow… lol. I’ll always remember that. I got to go to regionals, but got cut pretty early.

I got to be in the school spelling bee in 5th grade, but I got out in the very first round with “fearful.” Spelled it with two l’s. Ugh.

I would’ve won the school one, and my word was “electrocution,” which was sooo easy, but when I heard it I heard “electrotution” and I was like what? And I say “electro tu tion” and she said “yes, electrotution” and I spelled it e-l-e-c-t-r-o-t-u-t-i-o-n and she was like WRONG. And I was like “but you said it was tution” and she’s like no, after she gives all these other kids lame redoes. Whatever.

lol that’s me

I wanted to partisipate once, but for some resan, everybuddy says that my speling is awefull.

I guess we did an early round in class or something in middle school, 7th grade. I was always supposedly a good speller (in second grade I was the “teacher’s spell check,” sounds a little obnoxious now that I think of it, but anyway) so I was pretty confident.
Until I got the word “larceny.” I had never heard it before, but I knew about arson, so I spelled it “larsony.” Obviously it was wrong and I was sad that I got kicked out of this thing in my English class.
Soon I began seeing and hearing the word EVERYWHERE. Typical.

The next year, they decided not to do the spelling bee thing. I was disappointed.

As for the geography bee…I totally guessed on my questions.

My daughter was in it in 8th grade. She didn’t make it past the written round. It was a blast and the Scripps does a great job of making sure all the kids and their families have an awesome time.
