Is anyone on CC a national spelling bee participant/champion?

Lol, just wondering

I was just watching the national spelling bee, which, while quite boring, is impressive considering the words are really hard and confusing. I would have probably been out like the 1st word, hahaha

So, did anyone on here actually participate in that? Just curious o.ob

lol! when i did it in the 5th grade, i got knocked out in regionals (4th place:)

Kinda silly when the words aren’t really English and it basically devolves into an etymology test.

Sort of!!

I never made it to the national bee, but I was #2 in my school district in 9th grade. I got cheated out so badly and I cried for like 3 hours.
The person before me in the final 3 incorrectly spelled “bionanobattery.” So my confidence level shot up and then it was my turn. If I got it wrong, the other person had to spell their word right and then they won.

Well, to put it short, I got “Sacchariferous.”

Totally failed. I spelled it with a “k.” I wanted to cry. So I was hoping my opponent would get a really really hard one and give me another chance.

Sure enogh, he got “postpone.” And he pretended to stumble on it just to be a jerk.

I was soooo mad.

He made it to state but not to the national bee.

I would have loved to be in that though.

No, I’m not a great speller, but Akeela and the bee was on lifetime about a week ago

^ LOL, thank you for that information.

I spelled lacrosse wrong. Still remember it to this day. I accidentally said two “c’s” realized my mistake at the “o” and almost cried my eyes out that day

OMG I can’t believe she spelled menhir wrong. LOL. I’ve seen that word thousands of times and got it immediately.

There seemed to be several easy words this year. Guayabera was somewhat tricky because of b vs. v, but becquerel shouldn’t have been on there.

I can’t believe that one guy missed prosopopoeia right at the end. Ugh. I was embarrassed for him.

Oh, and I went to the state spelling bee in 5th grade and got like 20something-th place - missed promenade because I am ■■■■■■■■.

Anurag Kashap (or however it is spelled) went to my middle school when he won the national spelling bee lol. He got to speak at grad since he won haha.

You would think that with the types of people we have on CC, there’s got to be at least a few famous folks who have done things like this :)

I’ve never been in the national one, but in a school contest in fifth grade, I nearly got to the top three… I spelled “taupe” wrong. I knew the word, but not how it was pronounced, so when I heard it, I didn’t recognize it. I’m still irritated by it to this day. :P

I was in it in 2004

I never did the spelling bee but when I was in eight grade I was eighth in the state in the Geography Bee. I won the school on twice in a row also.

anurag kashyap is a genius, he won the national spelling bee and the jeopardy teen tournament!

yeah he is!!!

This has turned into a “No, I haven’t. But…” thread.

I was in the National Spelling Bee in 2006.

Ah. Jealous. I always wanted to be in the Bee in middle school and in the teen tournament… now. I’ve always missed deadlines. :,[

No, I haven’t. But… I also participated in the GeoBee. In seventh and eighth grade. Damn genius sixth graders.
