National Spelling Bee

I watched the national spelling bee last night, and I was curious if anybody here had any spelling bee experience, or a bee of any kind. Me=Was a two time participant of the national geographic Bee, got something like 4th in school 7th grade, won 8th.

i watched it too! umm yes i have experience i won my fifth grade(haha) schoolwide spelling bee and came in 6th in regionals. the next three years no such luck. they were so nerveracking. those kids are amazing

i was at the regional spelling bee a couple of times (it's basically the one right before nationals)

actually im pretty sure its regional, then state, then nationals. unless u live in like an odd place ??

i went to the national speeling bee when i was in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. In 5th grade I didnt make it past round 1. In 6th i made it to round 3 and placed 69th. In 7th i placed 30th. and in 8th I placed 7th. It was one of the best experiences of my life!!!! If you have such an oppurtunity........TAKE IT!!!

I was a participant in the NGB:
School champion and state qualifier, grades 5-8
State finalist 6, 8
State champion 8
National finalist 8 (6th place)

woww impressive

Do you prepare for one of those things? ...study the dictionary?

Wow.

I won the fifth, sixth, and seventh grade spelling bees. I came in second - fifth in the school-wide ones.

This year I came in second in the school-wide geography bee.

Who ended up winning last night, anyway?

lol it was funny... I was watching it around 9:00 and I think they were in the last round... then I heard a buzzing noise and it was a huge yellow jacket in my room.. AHH. lol

KissMeKate-do you prepare for these things??

You should see the movie Akeelah and the Bee...I haven't seen it, but it's about just that

what kind of words do you get in spelling bee thinggy? give me some example.

Really hard ones.

The easiest word I saw was hepitiphlitus or whatever. I can't even spell it.

Maybe the easiest was paillon...I don't know. That one I can actually spell. lol.

I won my school's National Geographic Bee, but I've never competed in any spelling bees...

you mean "heptaphyllous"? yeah you really suck lol

I won a class spelling bee once

But no matter how well I can spell, my computer can spell better

And I'll never use the words they use at nationals

rjimenez_1824, I don't. I meant to ask how does someone prepare for a big spelling bee.

man those words were INSANE!
the only ones i knew were babism and hukilau
i had tons of class spelling bees in elementary and won a lot of them
had a school-wide spelling bee and won first place
nothing much after that

I wonder if this affects college admissions. Or if it doesn't at all. I tried to look something like this up last night but couldn't find anything. BTW, Kerry Close won. They were all AMAZING...I knew only one of the ones - tutoyer, because they have a similar word in Spanish.

i was laughing so hard at all those kids. i loved how the shy ones would go up there and the guy would say the word they had to spell, and then they'd say it to themselves and the guy would respond "Yes, the word is _____"

one kid kept saying the word to himself and every single time the proctor guy would do that. the girl who wrote on her arm was just a weirdo. that show was so funny.
