Is AP Lit a crucial class to take senior year?

Hello everyone,

My academic year just started in that past week, and I really need to make some decisions here. I am in AP Literature, and am having second guesses about taking it. I hate timed inclass essays, and I heard a lot of it was going to happen this year. I got an A in AP English last year and also scored a 4 on the exam (not great, but still okay)

I was considering dropping it for AP Art History. Can anyone tell me if this would be a mistake... or should I suck it up and try my best? I don't care if I get a B in it (weighted 4.0)

Any ideas?

IF you dont really mind the B just suck it up and try your best. Art History seems really boring...

it might look weird if you took ap english last year and did good in it then dropped it this year because you dont like writing timed essays

I know. My ap English teacher last year loaded us with essays, and in class essays, but fortunately, when he graded the in class essays... he told us what we would've scored on the ap exam, but he never actually used it as a grade for the class. The AP Lit teacher is not going to do that of course. She will give ONLY inclass essays every week... this really is my weakness for the most part. I'm worried about getting a C in it, because what am I going to tell colleges then during mid year reports?

Is this an important class? Are you required to take it in college at one point?

AP Lit itself is not inherently necessary (though would be the logic choice after AP Lang), but having only three years of English could be a problem, as I am fairly certain that some colleges require four, as might your state's graduation requirements. So I would check your colleges to make sure it won't hurt you.

Remember: most rigorous course load possible.

That said, you should take it unless you have a very good reason not to. Since you don't, just suck it up and take it -- other applicants are, and so should you.

Words of encouragement. I guess I will.

if you hate it, you hate it. theres not much you can do about it. youre trading an ap for an ap. suck it up and drop it. no college will reject you just because you didnt take ap lit.

I can't lie to myself really. AP Literature is not really for everyone.. I think? AP English... at least I could write essays and take vocabulary tests... but AP Literature.. we're talking hours of reading dense books the sizes of bricks. I tried reading some... and I started even reading it over again to get the gist of it. The books we're starting to read is all about philosophy. I have this book called Sophie's World.. and I think I'm about to puke already.

Whats AP english? Cause there is no test for it. Unless you mean AP language...but that wouldnt be right because AP Language is supposed to be writing based (im in it and all we do is read some texts, analyze rhetorical components, and then write tons of essays). Ap lit is supposed to be more reading based (thus literature).

I got a 5 on AP Language while mentioning I wasn't going to take AP Lit because I'm not a slave to the college board in one of my essays... Seeing as you don't want to take it, don't, don't give in to these losers who think that if you don't get all A's in AP classes you're a failure at life. That's my opinion.

My son was in the same situation. Although a top student, timed writing was a weakness. His counselor felt he should take AP Lit & Comp and my son agreed because he felt it would help him in the long run. I thought it was a mistake as he would have 6 APs and his teacher is known to be a tough grader. He could take honors English instead. But HE insisted. As expected, he received an 80 every qtr (maybe even a 75 once). But he did see progress each qtr (although not in grade). In the end, the 80 in the class wound up equivalent to a 5 on the AP exam - just a tough teacher.

When applying to colleges, he sent in a great rec from his 11th grade honors English teacher in addition to his math/science rec. The 80 didn't hurt him too much in GPA but his rank DID drop. In any case, he still got into some top schools - it's a myth that you need all As. So, don't be afraid to challenge yourself if you think the class will help you.

My school doesn't have any honors class. We only have about 8 AP classes offered here, and I've taken 3 of them already. Senior Year, my choices are really small. I'm definitely taking AP Government, and I want at least one more AP class for senior year. The AP sciences will not do because they will require me to Drop JROTC since they require us to be in their seminar classes for Lab. AP Literature as stated before... I don't really think that this class was meant for me. There are good books of literary merit, but this philosophical mess at this extreme I think is a bit much. I'm thinking about taking English 12, and replacing AP Lit with AP Art History (Same teacher that taught my APUSH class.. and I got a 5)

ap world history and ap euro history do not exist in my school if anyone was wondering. I would've loved those classes.

Can anyone give me more feedback? Is AP Art History a good class? It looks interesting, and it couldn't be that hard.

Also... what looks better.. getting a C in an AP class or an A in a regular class?

A in a regular class. By FAAAAAAAAAR

Does anyone know which one is easier:

AP Art History or AP English Literature
