Guys, after much consideration I really think Columbia is a good fit for me and I want to apply ED for class of 2011. It is by far my first choice, although I certainly wouldn't be unhappy at many of my other choices. However, I'm a Filipino who grew up in New Zealand lives in the United States. I'm not a permanent resident, and my family certainly can't afford Columbia without financial aid (we are a slight upper middle-class family). Seeing as applying ED can help my chances of getting in, I was wondering if I might be put in a bad position. Anyone in a similar position or is anyone willing to help?

Thanks

Firstly I'd say visit before you label it your first choice. For years and years MIT was my first choice but that changed in about 3.6 seconds after being there and seeing some of the people there. I know it's hard to get visits in, I had to drive 15+ hours to see Columbia, but trust me, if you can, it's well worth it. It seems like you'd be able to afford 1 round-trip plane ticket from wherever you are in the U.S.

As far as actually applying...remember that ED is binding. I was so scared to apply ED anywhere because I hear it is a really big hastle to have the binding clauses removed and if you just ignore those clauses, you can (and probably will be) taken to court. Not sure if international students do FAFSA's but if so then I'd say fill one out just for fun and see what your EFC (estimated family contribution) is and see if you can reach that. But then again, ED does really improve your chances from anywhere from 5-10%....

good luck

So you ended up applying Regular Decision?
Also, does anyone have experience or has anyone seen international Early Decision applicants gain admission with financial aid?
