Is Asian American Studies an easy major?

I've heard that it is, but I don't know anyone personally who can confirm that it is one of the easier or easiest majors in L&S.

BTW, I'm a philosophy major and the grading is fairly difficult.

if ur already in philosophy, one of the easiest majors, and ur looking for an even easier major, then u need to take a look in a mirror and ask yourself, “is life worth living or should i blast myself?” (2pac)

^ Dude…philosophy is a hard major…

yeah philosophy is def. not easy

Lakerforever24 is just ■■■■■■■■ with sarcasm, he/she doesn’t even go to Cal.

Anyone with real answers?

Agreed. Philosophy is one of the hardest majors at Cal (I have several friends in the major and I’ve seen both their workload and grade distribution).

Asian American Studies is comparatively easy. I say that only because the lower-division classes require almost no effort to get an A in.

IvyRomantic, cool. Yea I mean the Philosophy Advisor told us that Philosophy majors have the lowest average GPA of all the humanities majors. After taking Phil 25B I can see why.

easy but there are no cougars, better off with animal science or something

LOL 10 char

im an AAS major. it’s pretty easy except the upper divs ethnic studies courses tend to be harder than the actual AAS courses.

are you asian? why would you want to study what you already know

Well, all of us Americans study American history for 12 years straight, so…

Haha good point amarkov.

But this is college now. While major comes down to a personal preference but… there are better alternative majors that will broaden your experiences.

…you weren’t joking?

Would you like to kick all the white people out of Western Studies majors too?

lol philosophy is hard? Try ChemE or EECS bud

Is anyone else tired of the arrogance of engineers? I know I am.

i wouldn’t say all whites. those with a bit of reddish sunburn can stay.

@cavilier,

Engineering is not only considered difficult, but also grade deflated relative to the rest of the university (just an objective fact, not arrogance).

Its been suggested that having a more humanities-like grading policy would destroy Berkeley’s engineering rankings–where a significant chunk of Berkeley’s prestige lies…

So next time you humanities majors want to work in Asia, know that the engineering dept. gives your university street cred.

First, I am not a humanities major. All of the classes I’ve taken have been 4 unit math/science/engineering courses with the exception of my R&C class and E10 which is a 3 unit class. The difficulty of these classes is not so high as to justify all the whining I hear from my classmates, and it certainly doesn’t justify demeaning other majors.

Difficulty definitely depends on the individual. After seeing my schedule for my first semester, my adviser freaked out and strongly recommended that I take some “easy humanities.” I ignored her and finished that semester will all A’s. This semester, I am taking 15 units of science/math/engineering and 4 units of R&C. My R&C class is giving me the most grief by far, and I am no slouch at reading and writing (800 CR, 710 writing on the SAT and 750 on the Lit SAT II).

It’s funny you should bring up Asia, because I happen to have a roommate who moved to America during high school. He told me he was surprised when people thought he was smart because he was good at math. He never heard anyone say similar things to people who were good at writing. He explained in Taiwan, someone who is good at math is simply good at math and nothing more. There is no arbitrary exaltation of technical over creative skill.
