Is AU just a party school with nothing but sorority/frat life?

First, I love school and learning. I’m not really interested in the party life, or joining a sorority. I want to take classes that are of interest to me, and learn as much as I can while there. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a homebody that just sits around with a book in my hand at all times, I enjoy music, dancing, football games, basketball games, good food and fun times with friends. However, it seems from the posts that I am reading on FB, here on CC, and on Capex that learning is not a priority on this campus. The reviews are all about drinking, drugs, and greek life.

I would love to hear from some current students what their opinion is of the campus, and maybe even some students involved in the Honors College.

 Thanks!

No. Most students do not join sororities and fraternities at Auburn, and there are tons of serious but nice and fun students at Auburn who are not into the partying scene. I spent four years there and never went to a single frat party, nor did any of my friends. You will not feel pressured or left out at all, and there are tons of other activities to get involved with. They also have a new incredible rec center if that interests you. Auburn has great school spirit and alumni everywhere. You will love the football and basketball games there.

AU has it’s share of fun and sorority/fraternity life but that I have not heard your description associated with Auburn. Are you mixing it up with UA?

Me too! Well, actually it was five years…

Personally, I do not consider Auburn to be a “party school.” Sure, like all colleges, it has parties… but not more than average. In fact, my impression is that Auburn students are slightly more serious than most college students and a lot friendlier. Auburn is the friendliest place that I ever lived.

I know a good number of Honors students there this year (I’ll be a freshman in the fall), and only a few of them are involved in Greek life. There’s just so much to do that Greek life isn’t really all that prevalent or obvious. Neither are parties - yeah, you can seek them out if you want to, but a good bit of them are usually off campus, and if you’re not interested, you’re not going to be burdened by them. The Honors college is great, but if you’re doing something like band or a major sport, you might not have enough time for it. The rec center is to die for. If you can, I would also try to secure housing in an Honors hall - I know there’s one in the Village (where I’ll be living), and another or two in the Hill or Quad. They’ll be the less rowdy and more your style.

Also take a look at [all these clubs and organizations](- AUinvolve). There’s really so so much to do. I’ve also heard that service and volunteering are pretty big at Auburn, so that might be something you enjoy too. But yeah, what you’re describing sounds much more like UAlabama than Auburn. Remember, just because the most vocal and visible online impressions are drugs/partying/alcohol doesn’t mean that actually represents the majority of the school.

My son will be there in the fall and is enrolled in Honors College. The school that I attended has a party school reputation, so I think I know one when I see one. However, I definitely got a different vibe from Auburn. I’m sure they have their share of fun, but it’s really not like some of the other SEC schools that have earned their party school reputations.
Have you visited? We were super impressed.

If you want a party, you can find a party. If you’d rather not party, nobody’s going to make you.
It is what you make of it.
