How easy is it to get from AU into the heart of D.C? From what I can see, it’s further out of the city than GW or Georgetown…from the point of view of getting in to the city for an internship etc, is it difficult? I was told by someone that the shuttle bus is very good, someone else at Au then told me that they don’t run on time etc. Would appreciate some feedback from anyone experiencing it first hand! Thanks.

If you go to the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority website, you can look at the subway map and see where AU’s Metro stop is located in relation to other parts of DC, and you can also test out various destinations and get a route and the estimated travel time. AU is indeed less centrally located than GW or Georgetown (and the upside of its location is that it’s pleasantly suburban in look and feel), but this doesn’t stop thousands of AU students from traveling throughout the District for work or play. AU students love to complain about the shuttle buses from the campus to the Metro stop, but in all the times I’ve visited my D, I’ve never had to wait more than ten minutes for a bus, and it’s usually just a few minutes–and the distance is quite walkable if you’re so inclined.

My D has also never had a problem getting to metro. Even without the shuttle bus, its a relatively short walk. I myself have taken the shuttle several times without a problem. My D has had friends at Georgetown complain how far they are from the metro. They have a lot to do in Georgetown, but they are less convenient to the metro.

I’m going to be living in the AU area this summer and working downtown, but I am not an AU student. Do the shuttle drivers check for AU ID when you board the bus? I’m a current student at another university, so I look like a typical college kid and was hoping that I could use the shuttle to get to the metro without any problems.

I’ve never been carded on the shuttle, even when traveling alone, and I’m 35 years past looking like a college student. But you might want to check the summer shuttle schedule to see if it runs frequently enough to work for you (I have no idea if it changes for the summer).
