I am a HS senior with the following: 3.9 uw GPA, 31 ACT, 9 APs, and plenty of activities/volunteer to round out my application. I am TORN on what to do for college because I have conflicting desires. A part of me wants to go to the Barrett Honors College at ASU and take advantage of the priority class selection, unlimited food plan and beautiful campus/weather, despite the fact that its at ASU... But another feels like I can and should do better with a school of a higher reputation! I did get waitlisted at UChicago (I don't want to go there anymore) and I was accepted into U Miami and UW-Madison, while waiting on my response for Northwestern.

Since Barrett will offer me the best college experience, is it still worth passing up on the other schools if I feel like I will be the happiest there?

Net price of each school?

Academic and career interests?

Barrett = $25,000
UW-Madison = $30,000
UMiami = $57,000 (before any scholarships)
Northwestern = $60,000 (I doubt I would get one here)
*All of these are rough estimates

I am planning on graduating with a double major in Finance/Economics or Economics/Math or Finance/Math. The correct combo I will figure out in college, but what’s for sure is I want to pursue a career in investing. I also plan on going to graduate school.

Are these net price calculations or jakewillms calculations? Run the npcs because it will provide information on need-based grants your family may be eligible for. Grants are available to families making more than 150K, so check them out.

OP might have actual scholarship and financial aid offers for some schools, so that would be even better than net price calculators…

“Graduate school” means what?

PhD in math, economics, or business
MFE (“financial engineering”)
MBA
other

Note that the first two categories require a strong math and statistics background. The MFE and MBA are typically done after some work experience.

With respect to jobs, at least some sectors of finance (elite investment banking) are highly school-prestige-conscious. However, even your most prestigious schools (probably Northwestern and Wisconsin) may not make the cut for being well recruited (compared to HYP).

Some schools have career surveys:

https://eoss.asu.edu/cs/students/gradreport
http://www.northwestern.edu/careers/about-us/survey-data.html

ASU Barrett is not “ASU” but “Barrett”. Barrett’s reputation is extremely high. So you’d do very, very well professionally and academically.
The cost differential really doesn’t make it worth it for you to attend UMiami, unless you have scholarships (you should hear soon).
