So, i’m not so athletic. I don’t love the outdoors and I don’t play sports. I’m not preppy. In all honesty, would i feel a little left out at this school? I mean obviously not EVERYONE is athletic there. But is sports and that type of thing big there like I hear it is? I really will have no hurt feelings. (I’m not attached to Bates). I just want a 100% honest opinion… thanks!

My D, a theater, dance, skiing, and wilderness travel enthusiast is not an athlete - she said that she wished she had known that Bates IS “sporty”. Many students are athletes, but it was only a problem at meals (teams usually eat together); requiring a little extra effort to create a regular dining friend group. She did not feel actively excluded, just that many friends/roommates had obligations to practice and meals that she did not, until she found her own activity niches. She did not regret choosing Bates.

Bates does have a lot of varsity sports but that doesn’t mean you will be left out. I am not sporty at all, yet i am still very good friends with sporty types of people. Alpine skiing is very popular. I agree with ugogrrl that there are other niches out there, but a part of college is trying new things and broadening your horizons. I took a squash PE class and loved it, never really knowing what squash was before i took it.

Good to know as I’m interested in playing on the baseball team!
