So, i'm not so athletic. I don't love the outdoors and I don't play sports. I'm not preppy. In all honesty, would i feel a little left out at this school? I mean obviously not EVERYONE is athletic there. But is sports and that type of thing big there? I really will have no hurt feelings. (I'm not attached to Colby). I just want a 100% honest opinion.. thanks!

Certainly, not everyone plays sports, but it seems like a lot of students stay fit and enjoy the outdoors in one way or another. Don’t know if you’d feel left out, but I wonder if the college would be the best fit for someone who doesn’t enjoy those things. It’s obviously not an urban environment and one of the attractions, for many students, is the beauty of Maine and all the possibilities that offers for outdoor pursuits. On the other hand, many students may get so busy with campus activities like teams, but also arts groups, publications etc. that they spend much less time off campus enjoying Maine than they would have expected. That was true for my S. Would be best to get reactions from current or recent students…

My daughter decided to go to Colby (class of 2015) because she felt the student body IS outdoorsey/athletic. She wants the Div III sports teams, the snowboarding, hiking, backpacking, etc… I am sure there are other kids at Colby who are not so sporty, but there are other great schools (Macalester, Grinnell, Carleton, for example) where some of her friends are going–specifically because athletics are less of a focus. If that is a real concern for you, look closely at some of the great schools which are less sporty. You don’t have to give up on Colby, but look at some of the other schools which are less sporty before making a decision.

Current student here.

So, athletics. Basically, it is not a big deal on the varsity level. That is to say that while students enjoy supporting our DIII sports teams (Hockey games and Basketball seem to be the most popular IMO), we are still DIII. Game day is mainly for athletes, not other students spectating.

At the same time, somewhere around 70% of students at Colby participate in some form of organized sport (30% on a Varsity team; 10% on a Club team; the rest + overlap in iPlay, the intramural program). The Outing Club is also extremely popular on campus and students like to take advantage of Maine.

So in summary, Sailfish and GDMACK are right: Colby students are very outdoorsy and athletic in general. That is how I would describe the average Colby student. There are other kinds of students at Colby, and there is no doubt for me that you could find friends here (Colby is also home to a very friendly and open student body), but if the outdoorsy/athletic thing is a deal-breaker for you I would advise that you consider some other options that might be a better fit. If you do choose Colby, though, we’d love to have you!

tl;dr: Colby students are, on the whole, very outdoorsy/athletic. Consider other options, but we have a very friendly student body who’d love to make you feel welcome as a Mule otherwise.
