So I was looking at a booklet BC sent me along with reading the Fiske guide and I got the impression that BC had lots of preps and “bros”. Where I live, there aren’t many preps at all, but I have heard from many people that lots of people wear polos and Abercrombie to class at BC.

Is this true?

I know this won’t be a deciding factor for me, but if I were to attend or apply to BC, would I be surrounded by this common appearance? Coming from the west coast, I know Boston along with many other wealthier areas have many people dress that way. I have absolutely nothing against looking too preppy, but does the presence feel suffocating sometimes?

I dunno if too preppy, but students there seem to want to dress in the latest fashionable attire and most can afford it. There are plenty of “non-conformists” so its not suffocating, but certainly noticeable. BTW Abercrombie is out, JCrew is in. Abercrombie is so … uh… high school :-)

Dear lclaire : Boston College does tend to have the reputation for upscale dress, but with two childen on campus, there are as many sweats and hoodies as most any other campus. With 9,000 undergraduates, you are going to find a melange of just about every dressing style.

If you are considering Boston College (along with Virginia and UNC-Chapel Hill per your other posts), it would be best for you to visit the east coast to tour these schools first hand during the Spring semester. You will be able to formulate your own realistic views as opposed to drawing conclusions from a staged series of photos in the glossy literature.

I buy all my clothes from Target. Nothing “preppy” about me.

It really depends from student to student, and quite frankly, people don’t care about you are wearing at all. There is better business to tend to. Everyone is merely concerned with his or her own style and no one else’s.

And yes, J.Crew is quite popular around here.

I agree with 123, but I do not see people walking around to class in sweats that much. I feel that unlike most other schools, we dress up just a LITTLE more, not to the point where heels are necessary, but we do make an effort; even for 9 AMs.

Who cares? Like they said, try something new! Besides, with 9,000 kids you’re bound to find someone else who’s having a bad clothes day, or whatever. And in winter, West Coast clothes don’t work anyway. I totally understand you, being from Florida.

Add Wake Forest to that list, and you’ll come to understand what prep really means. :)

California is the third-fourth? most represented state. Not all of those kids are purchasing new wardrobes. Of course, Abercrombie and JCrew (along with Northface) actually have retail stores west of the Hudson River.

People here are not nearly as preppy as I expected. People are well dressed and a first it seemed like there wasn’t much diversity with style, but there really is. It is a big enough school that you will be able to find people of any style. I noticed that people dressed really well when the weather was nice, but now that its cold and snowy/rainy, people seem to care much less haha. You’ll notice probably half the people in jeans/sweatshirt/sweatpants now.

i’m currently a freshman at BC and I have to agree BC is definitely not too preppy. I was actually kind of surprised coming in at how diverse the student body is.

Most people just wear sweats and sweatshirts to class, very few actually dress up. I’m in a few classes of over 150 and I would say at most I’ve seen maybe 60 people dressed up and that was at the beginning of the school year when the weather was really nice.
