Is being a Muslim helpful for college admissions?

Hi, everyone,

As the title implies, do adcoms give any preference to Muslims?

Thanks

probably not, why would they?

It really depends on what school u r applying to. if they have a shortage of a certain minorty, in ur case muslim, it will bump ur chances up.

nope. they dont even ask for religion. try again. :)

thats my pet peeve, people lookin for ways in grrr

as opposed to looking for ways OUT?

not following u

you get mad at people who try to find ways to get into college.

who doesn't try to find ways to get into college? whether it be with your GPA, SAT or religion and race

u work for ur GPA, SAT...getting into college for sumthing other then wut u work for is in my opinion rediculous

what the heck are you saying?

I hope not, that would be absolutely wrong.

Well, there are a bunch of Muslim Student Associations (MSA) every where, so i don't really know.

But to the thread, not really, I do believe affirmitave action helps the more prone to economic disadvatanged groups (african americans, hispanics)

that's not racist. muslims aren't a race, but rather a cult. u fail it.

Nosferatu is only stating

islam is not a cult , its a religion

Maybe if you join Muslim groups and become active in the muslim community then it may count.

But if religion is not considered.. what about being arab (if you are) or a Jew?

Would that count as an URM like Mexican or Puerto Rican?

If being Muslim is something that defines you as a person and differentiates you from others, by all means write about it in your essays. Although schools don't ask for a religion on your application, you can demonstrate your beliefs in your essays. Perhaps there are ethnic issues that might be a "hook". One girl from my D's school who was accepted to H (the only from her school who was accepted to H) was a good student (not in top 10% of the class) and is an Iraqi immigrant. Although not a "listed" URM, surely this played a role in her acceptance.
