Is being from Alabama an advantage?

I just saw this thread and got really excited:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/princeton-university/1104177-alabama-applicant-p1.html
Especially because of this part:
Wow! According to Princeton's geographic region sheet 3 people were accepted for the undergraduate program from Alabama; however, the good news is from another source, I read said that there were only 4 with a 27 and above and three were chose out of those four. :) This just made me really excited!
Do I really have a good chance?
I'm average by CC standards. I'm going to be a senior this fall. I have a 32 ACT with an 8 on writing and am taking it again next week. I'm ranked 6 out of around 300 at my public school in Alabama and my unweighted GPA is 3.96. My ECs are very weak. I joined National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society this past year and Mu Alpha Theta in tenth grade. I don't have any leadership positions. I volunteer as a tutor and at the animal shelter, but I only started volunteering last year. I took AP US History, AP Art History, and AP English Language this past year and am predicting 5s on both histories and a 4 on English. I am taking six APs next year: Psych, Lit, Spanish, US Gov, Macroecon, and Calc AB. I'm planning on majoring in sociology and minoring in Spanish. I'm white and female. If someone could predict my chances I would really appreciate it. Thank you!!

I think you need to take that information with a grain (or more) of salt. The students that were accepted from Alabama may have significant background information that increased the likelihood of admission - for example they may be recruited athletes or have some other hook. Also bear in mind that Princeton doesn’t have to accept students from every state (they don’t typically although there is often representation from most ). Even if they did, relying on a three year old thread with one person’s hearsay and very little hard data isn’t much to go on.

For some more accurate data check out this link: http://www.princeton.edu/admission/applyingforadmission/admission_statistics/
There is a link on the left that will tell you admission by state. You can see that no students were admitted from four different states for the class of 2017.

For your actual chances, you’re probably in the range of 7-8% from what you have shared (based on the overall admit rate and your GPA). If you are really interested in going to Princeton, I’d suggest you apply there as well as your safety schools and see what happens. It really is a long shot for pretty much everyone but it’s probably better to try and not leave yourself wondering what would have happened if you had applied. Good luck!
