I just recently got nominated by my high school principal for Boys State, which means i visit state capitol and represent my school etc. Is this a good thing for college apps. I mean hwo much does it help for major schools like the ivy league or stanford etc.?

Yes, it's a good thing. My son did it and had a blast. It's a great program.

Yes, but epsecially if you get a high ranking leadership position. They say the most common regret people have is not aiming for a higher level position.

It's something to put on apps, and can help to an extent in admissions.

But, I see that you're in California. I was a delegate to the CA Boys' State, and I can tell you this: the boys are very competitive for "higher-level positions," especially since there are so many. There's something for everyone, but what Boys' State really shows about you is the academic/extracurricular requirements of being chosen. If you get a position, great -- but don't think it's a hook, as it doesn't really show a long-time commitment (as an EC would).

i LOVED boys state. it was the most amazing experience of my entire high school career. i would totaly recommend it. i attended california boys state last year. we planned reunions with the guys. in fact, we update teach other just about every week. so awesome!

I went to Girls State, then Girls Nation. It was the time of my life...totally amazing! However, I can't speak for how much it has really helped me in the college admissions process YET - get back to me on April 1st, then I'll let you know. XD So far, both me and another GN senator have gotten into Georgetown SFS.

As far as I know, an 07 Boys Nation senator has gotten into West Point!

I went to boys state and it was awesome. What you put in is what you get out of it, so make sure you do everything you can.

how do you join boys state?

you have to be nominated for it, by i believe school administrators or history teachers. The people selected are sent for interviews with the american legion. Then they pick 2 people out of those selected, one is the school's representative for boys state, the other is the alternate. then you go from there :) hope that was helpful log onto calegion.org or your states american legion website to find more info

Actually my school works differently.

The AP US History teacher picks the nominees and 6 students are picked. A student from another school couldn't go, so my school was able to send 7 students to Boys State last year. I was one of the original 6, which were picked.

There is an interview for Boys State, but the American Legion member, who interviewed the students and me, said that he did not have that much to ask because we already filled out the essay and other forms.

I heard Boys State definitely helps fro UCs and USC. I also believe it helps for the ivies.

I was in CA Boys State 2007, so this was not that long ago. Have fun in CA Boys State 2008. (I skipped a grade a few years ago, so if I could have been in Boys State '08.)

Running for a high position is tough. Most people try to aim for governor, but I suggest running for Senator. Running for Senator is less work than running for a county position.

Also, about the roommates, sometimes the bedrooms are split into a student from Northern California and a student from SoCal, but there are exceptions. My roommate was from San Diego.

Most of the people from my school weren't really sociable there, so most opf the time, I was always with people from the other high schools.

Hopefully, you win governor.

^^ I hadn't realized that they did a NorCal-SoCal split. Now that I think about it, I remember my roommate lived about 30 minutes from Sacramento. (I'm from SoCal.)

I do know that the other two boys from my school were put in completely separate counties. I suppose they're trying to prevent cliques and all that.
