Is Boston University worth a premium over a large quality State University?

Hi,

My DD is interested in engineering (not Biomedical) and I was wondering if BU would be worth a premium over a school like University of Pittsburgh (we are OOS)?

Debt is not an issue. It is just how much am I willing to pay. Merit Aid will potentially narrow the gap, but BU will still be 10k to 20K per year more expensive.

So far my opinion is that the only real pro BU has over Pitt that it is in Boston.

One daughter is at BU (busness) and my other daughter is a rising senior in high school. We just toured UPitt and I really liked it. I’m not sure about the engineering programs at either school, but they both universities seemed comparable in many ways. BU feels more modern but I felt the caliber of education was on the same par. Just opinion, not based on any factual evidence.

Look here: http://www.payscale.com/college-roi/ BU is pretty far down the list but not as far as Pitt for OOS… THere are other rankings as well that put BU around 395 or so.
