Is BS/MD a crapshoot?

I'm a BS/MD applicant and I'm wondering if anyone here has been rejected from lower-tier BS/MD programs and accepted by higher-tier ones like HPME, PLME, Rice/Baylor. I just got rejected by UMiami and Penn State w/o interview. Does this mean that I will also be rejected from my top choices like Rice/Baylor? My mom suspected that perhaps lower-tier BS/MD programs look for different qualities in applicants or don't like having a big fish a small pond.

im in the process of applying-so I cant confirm your question entirely, but honestly I don’t think it is entirely a crapshoot. Maybe it is in the sense that you wont get into every program even if your qualified, but I think that if you are qualified in some aspect-at least one program will give you an interview. Good luck!

I got into NEOUCOM, but I really don’t want to go. I hope that meaning rejected from Penn and Miami doesn’t mean that I will rejected w/o interview from Rice/Baylor, my top choice. My goal is to get to the interview stage because then, I know that my destiny is in my own hands and is determined based on how I perform at day and not based on my academic credentials and my teacher’s subjective whims.

kbbm24, have you heard from any programs yet and did you apply to Rice/Baylor?

i got an interview at miami HPME-didnt hear back from PSu yet

cocomonkee is sad. cocomonkee thinks she won’t get any of the programs she applied to. Oh well…

coco, sorry to hear that. but you can always try in college. find a good undergrad program and enroll their. work hard at gpa and ecs. you will find even better med schools from there. my son got disqualified from ps/jefferson because he submitted app on deadline and the sat score a couple of days earlier. penstate sent him a letter they will not consider him for combined program because they received the sat score a few days after deadline. we arepssdatthem. my s says if he doesn’t like the ug school then he won’t enroll even if the program accepts him. but he is still trying seriously a few combined – waiting nervously. actually coco is my dogs name, haha

I never really wanted to go there anyways. I just put on my app just to see what caliber BS/MD programs I could make it to…I hear from one of my top BS/MD programs CAse PPSP on Chinese New Year, so I’m wishing the best.

Many of the “lower tier” programs accept very few OOS candidates regardless of stats. R/B screens from approximately 300 candidates who already have been accepted to Rice, and the state of the applicant’s residence is not a factor. If you are accepted to Rice your chances of getting an interview are reasonable.

Wobudong, I think you’re right. Even though they don’t mention it explicitly, I’m sure those state universities favor kids from their own states. Penn STATE, UMiami, etc…I’m so glad Rice is a private university.

And Rice has Sam McGuffie

^^lol, how do you manage to randomly make football comments on random threads

Its certainly competitive, so in that sense, maybe its a crapshoot-but if your qualified and you apply to like 5-6 programs, you’ll get an interview somewhere. For me, I think parts of it are crapshoots. I got interviews at Miami, UMKC and Northwestern so far, but was rejected from Case and Now lehigh. Case was competitive this year, so a lot of qualified applicants would have gotten rejected, but lehigh was sort of random for me-so i guess in a sense its a crapshoot-but if you enjoyed what you did in high school and put in lots of effort into essays and applications-you’ll get an interview

UMiami is private, not public.

i definitely think in some ways it is a crapshoot, because different programs seem to look for different qualities. Some emphasize the stats, and only want a perfect SAT/GPA, some want strong medical ECs, and some want “change the world” type students… At this junction it’s not worth worrying about it, you have an acceptance and a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush! i’ve interviewed at a few places, and still have no clue where i may actually be accepted. Also, just clarification, PSU does not give preference to in-state…most people at their interview were from all over the country…I think this is because Jefferson Medical College doesn’t want to spare the geographic diversity of their medical school… Good luck, and I hope Rice/Baylor works out! :)

Oh, i didnt see that you already got into NEUCOM. Might I ask why you applied if you dont want to actually go?

I applied to NEOUCOM mainly to get some interview practice and to see if I could get into any BS/MD program. I knew that if I couldn’t get into this one, something must be terribly wrong, considering that I am an Ohio resident and am extremely qualified academically for this program. When I interviewed, I just couldn’t imagine myself spending six years in the middle of nowhere.
