I am planning to transfer into BU next year, but its USnews ranking makes me confused. I mean, I guess BU is far better than some other first tier schools like Tulane, Gerorge Washington, and Pepperdine. Then why is it at the end of the first tier?

No it is not underrrated. It is certainly not as good as another large city school, NYU. U of Miami, Syracuse and Pepperdine are peer schools of BU.

GW is overall a better school than BU, but BU has great programs in business, engineering, communications, and (I believe) pre-med, but the school has a lot of problems (poor alumni support, too much security, it's located on a huge road). Boston is fantastic in itself though!

BU is getting better, and it has the most awesome facilities...

I'd MUCH rather go to BU than NYU.

I've never heard anyone complain about 'too much security'. Theyre strict, but if you arent a moron it isnt a problem. Huge road? w t f? Yeah? Ok, and?

kCIRCH is correct. BU has too much security. I was there about two months ago, and a security officer walked up to me and my father and directed us to empty our pockets and the bag I was carrying or else he would call the police. we, of course, complied with his demands, and when he saw that my father was carrying a firearm, he told us to leave the campus grounds at once, or face arrest by the Boston Police Department

Which, I should add, was, in rhetrospect, a direct violation of fundamental constitutional rights.....are students subjected to such harassment? First, my father has a 4th amendment right to carry a firearm. Second, I am protected against unwarrented searches and seizures. But we were with a tour group, and we were embarrassed, so we complied...

On a private university campus, you go by their rules.

I wouldn't call NYU a peer of BU, it's far ahead of it academically. And I don't think that Miami, Pepperdine, or Syracuse are at it's level academically yet, although Miami certainly is bridging the gap.

Here are the universities that were given equal peer assessment ratings to BU in the 2004 US News Rankings. These are considered their peers.

University of Rochester (NY)
Wake Forest University (NC)
George Washington University (DC)
Boston University
University of Georgia *
University of Pittsburgh *
Univ. of Missouri Columbia *
Virginia Tech *
Univ. of Massachusetts Amherst *

I believe BU is overrated not underrated and disagree with the staement that University of Miami is not as good as BU academically. Not only is Miami ranked higher overall (55 versus 60 for BU) but it has a huge endowment and alumni giving thus giving it the ability to attract top notch students with nice scholarships and financial aid. University of Miami is also more selective than BU and it has a greater percentage of students in the top 10% of their high school class than BU.

U of Miami has great programs in the sciences and marine biolog along with music.

Miami is rising rapidly while BU is actually falling in the rankings.

Read this

USNews ranking is basically bull

just reading the first page of that, it just sounds like a couple people were quoted to prove the point that BU is awesome

US News is the most comprehensive and trusted... its not bull... BTW, 60 isntr bad.. its just one step under the top... One step.. not a whole flight od f stairs

U.S. News is valid to a certain extent. BU is just performing poorly in the ranking because of terrible edowment and alumni giving. That is what happens when you have a city school without a campus. Things start to feel a bit too impersonal for some and then the terrible alumni giving rate is a sign of that.

Although administrative problems have had a big part to do with BU's low rank as well.

From visiting both, i'll let you know that UMiami has one of the UGLIEST campuses i've ever seen.

I don't think BU is the quintessential, pretty college campus that most people would envision either jPod.

University of Miami has an ugly campus?

You are the first person that I have heard say that. To most it feels like a resort with palm trees, lakes and waterfalls.

LOL!

how many dads go on campus tour with their student pack heat ?

yea packing heat to tour a campus is a little much

"Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just excited by the BU campus?"

According to the BU Security website, here are the following recommendations for parents' weapons during campus tours:

Whites: .45 caliber pistol
URMs: .38 caliber revolver
Asians: Bazooka
