I’m considering attending Cal Poly SLO if I manage to get accepted, but I’m having a hard time finding recent feedback on how LGBT friendly Cal Poly is. Does anyone have any new feedback?
I’m not out, but I’m planning to be open about myself completely in college. I’m a gay male. Does Cal Poly have a good support club? Is the dating pool large?

Great question. Following. We are a family who embraces diversity and inclusion in all ways so I am hopeful you get a lot of positive and supportive responses to your question.
I would argue that it is, but that’s just from my viewpoint. There seems to be some diversity and inclusion events going on every week that the President sends an e-mail about. Plus, it’s a college campus in California…
There is a LGBT club on campus, and they even have their own graduation ceremony. See the information below, from Cal Poly Student Affairs office.
“Lavender Commencement is our annual celebration recognizing the scholarship and community contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, pansexual, and allied graduating students. All graduating LGBTQIAP and allied students, their families, friends and supporters are welcome to attend. The evening will feature special awards, a keynote speaker, and a reception.”
Also see a statement from the vice president’s office this month:
“In his email celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President Armstrong said that Dr. King left the world better off than when he found it. We hope that each of you work every day to make Cal Poly better than when you arrived, including how we treat each other and honor the multiple identities that each of us hold. As studies have confirmed over and again, diversity strengthens innovation, problem-solving, and intellectual growth and, thus, is key to our identity as a premier polytechnic institution. Cal Poly’s values of inclusion go hand in hand with a rejection of actions that hinder our learning environment. Illegal acts of racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, among others have no place at Cal Poly. When situations of bias or discrimination occur on our campus, we will respond to support our students, faculty and staff.”
