I am currently a High School senior in the Bay Area with a 3.9 GPA and a 24 ACT score, amazing extra circulars, and I’m an 5 year AVID student.

I have been accepted to: Cal Poly SLO, Fullerton, and SD State for business.

Waiting for: Santa Clara and UCI (Business major). UCSD and UCSB( Econ major)

I plan on getting my MBA after (hopefully USC, UCB, or another great school with lots of connections ).

Do you think I have a chance of getting into the schools I waiting for?

What undergrad school is best in order to get into a great Grad school?

Thanks!

my guess is you will get in all the schools, with the possible exception of UCSD.

I would think Santa Clara’s business program is strongest, therefore giving you the best chance for grad school?? also, being at a smaller school, you also definately have more opportunity to get to know your professors better at Santa Clara, and they can then write very strong personal recommendations for you for grad school.

Cal Poly is very highly regarded as a school, and I would think it would be more highly regarded than UCI and UCSB - especially since it is an actual business program versus an Econ major. Also, would think you would have a good chance of knowing professors there, similiar to Santa Clara, than a large UC. SDSU is the lowest. Question here would be UCSD - think the school overall is very highly regarded, more so than Cal Poly, and it is a UC (versus CSU) but it is known for Science, so Cal Poly’s Business program might actually be more prestigious than UCSD’s Econ program. But, it does carry the calling card of being a UC, which is more universally known outside of California.

Hey! I’m in a similar situation. I would definitely rather choose Cal Poly SLO over Fullerton & SDSU for business.

You’ll prolly get into Santa Clara, maybe UCI, maybe UCSB, and prolly not UCSD.

I think I’m going to choose between SCU & Cal Poly SLO. I’ll prolly choose Cal Poly SLO because it’s a lot cheaper, I like their hands on doing philosophy, and I love the town.

But SCU is great too. It’s higher ranked and located in Silicon Valley, the campus is gorgeous, but it is really expensive.

UCI bus is brand new, so I don’t know much about it.

UCSB is a great school, but you’ll be taking econ, which is a lot different than business. Same at UCSD. However, this would be a good path for an MBA as well.

SLO is a great choice for business. You can’t go wrong anywhere. BusinessWeek magazine recently ranked the business schools, and Cal Poly SLO is ranked 64th in the nation. SDSU and Fullerton arn’t even ranked, even though they both have solid business programs as well. SCU is ranked higher than CPSLO. UCSB and UCSD arn’t ranked cus their economics.

Best of luck.

Also, this year Cal Poly was harder to get into for business than Santa Clara. CPSLO business was EXTREMELY competitive. However, SCU probably has a bit better of a program, but you’ll be paying extra for that. BayAreaCAMom is dead on. Visit the schools and see where you can see yourself at.

I may not be a normal out of state person, but I don’t agree with BayAreaMom in one area:

'But, it does carry the calling card of being a UC, which is more universally known outside of California. '

Being from outside of CA I had almost no knowledge of the difference between a UC and CSU college. This is clearly well known within the state but if others are like me it is not known much outside the state. I do know the names of individual schools in California and CalPoly certainly seems to be much better known than many of the UC schools (such as UCSD, UCSC, UCI and UCD).

So, I think if you plan to live in CA it makes sense to consider the prestige factor of a UC school. If you expect to live elsewhere, I think the prestige of CalPoly is greater than many of the smaller UC schools.

Anyway, that is one out-of-state person’s opinion.

LSkaiWalk and BayAreaCAMom I see you guys all over the cal poly posts, you guys are very helpful!

Overall from posts, friends, family, and you guys I think Cal Poly is the way to go. Even though there aren’t too many internship opportunities, the price and hands on learning makes it worth it. The town’s beauty doesn’t hurt either:)

Hope to see you guys there!

Congratulations on getting into CPSLO and the other schools too! Many students have already heard from UCI, so there is a possibility that you will not be accepted there. they have been sending out acceptances for weeks now, but they may still be rolling them out. My opinion is that a state school, especially CPSLO, would be a better choice for you. Being in AVID is awesome and from what I know of the program, you have been taught a lot of good study skills. You receive extra attention and encouragement, which I would think you would be more likely to get at a CSU. The class sizes are smaller and the teachers are more helpful and focused on undergraduates. It is possible to become lost and overwhelmed in a UC.

I also think that people have spoken very highly of the CPSLO business program and the entire college and environment.

best of luck with your decision!
