Is Carnegie Mellon a good choice for Mechanical Engineering?

As everyone knows, CS here is really good. What about Mechanical Engineering here? Is it as good? Are the reputation of other engineering majors at CMU that are not CE EE and CS well known? My other choices are UIUC (Which is ranked higher in ME than CMU..but CMU is harder to get in.. so I dont know which one to choose), JHU, and Duke. Which one is the best choice for me?

If you are an Illinois resident I'd go to UIUC and buy a house and car with the leftover cash

i am an international student... so it doesnt matter much for me..any idea?

I think you need to take location into consideration a bit more....Urbana-Champaign is really quite different from Pittsburgh and Baltimore. I haven't been to Duke but NC is unique too. All of those schools have good programs (I don't know about Duke's program but Duke is a good school). The environments are so different that I imagine most people would prefer one.

Visit both if you can. Talk to the engineering department at CMU, I think you'll be impressed. But if not, go to Urbana.

Oh and dont' worry too much about individual specialized rankings. There a plenty of schools that outrank Ivies in such specialized fields but some are not even true or not to be bothered with. The reputations of the schools and postgrad employment surveys are more telling in my opinion. Anyways, yes the whole engineering department at CMU is very prestigious and the job employments should be more than enough proof to substantiate this fact.

job or grad-school wise, you will be in great shape with any of these schools.

therefore, choose on the "other factors".

JHU: in the ghetto
Duke: in the south
CMU: 3/2 guy to girl ratio

I think UIUC is the best bet

duke's a wonderful school.

This is getting boring...JHU is NOT in the ghetto. In fact, magnificent and very wealthy neighborhoods border Hopkins. Yes, there are bad neighborhoods in Baltimore. So, too, in NYC (do you actually know where Columbia is?), New Haven, Philly, etc.
