I've been accepted at Gatech, Umich and CMU for mechanical engineering and I'm trying to decide which to say yes to. I'm an international student so cost won't matter much to me, though I would like to save my parent's money if there isn't too much of a point going to CMU.

CMU has its obvious benefits being a private university. It is definitely more selective than the other two. Does that make its name a better brand/more well-known/prestigious than the other two? I've been told that the university's overall reputation should be taken into consideration because job placements are ultimately better. Gatech has a better engineering reputation. Which should be the more significant factor?

So, now I take a look at CMU...its mechanical rankings fall short. Gatech is 6th, Umich is 4th and CIT is 10th. If its computer science or computer engineering, it is a completely different story. What's the ultimate difference between its computer science program and its mechE program? Will you not be recruited for a job as highly paid? Is it still worth going to CMU for mechE. If rankings do reflect the reputation of that particular program, wouldn't be better to go to umich or gatech? Or am I wrong...program or selectiveness/overall reputation?

It will be great for your input

All three schools are top-10, I don't think within that ranking it matters a whole lot where you go. It's a lot more up to personal fit and how well the school meshes with your personality.

You might want to take a look at the kinds of research being done by professors at each school to get a feel what their MechE departments are interested in, as that could be a good deciding factor.

CMU is ranked lower b/c its a private, and smaller school than the other two. That said, I would go to Michigan if you wanna have fun in college.

So CMU is a hardcore engineering university...leaving atmosphere and fun aside, wouldn't that be more beneficial if you want to get a job in the engineering field and stuffs...wouldn't CMU help in the long run...if its a more hardcore engineering university.

B: You are asking something of people that have intimate knowledge of three schools and specifically a particular program at each school. Pretty difficult to answer and even if someone replied to your questions, how do you know that it is reliable.

If you want to be become an engineer, wouldn't you want to know if the data is true? I find in my business that, "most" don't care, don't want to know, and won't believe you and would rather take an opinion from someone who is just as ignorant as they are.
