I'm a newly admitted student and I'm doing chem 14A over the summer at CSI, so I was wondering if chem 14BL is generally available fall quarter so I can get ahead. Also, would taking this class fall quarter help me avoid the majority of the freshmen pre-med/Bio people who usually take 14A fall quarter (where they destroy curves and lives -_-)?

You generally take Chem 14A, then 14B (which is just a regular lecture class), and 14BL. You’re able to take 14B and 14BL at the same time, but you’re not required to. I believe lab classes are offered all year long, but feel free to look at Fall 2010’s schedule of classes at registrar.ucla.edu.

Wow, that’s so inconvenient… I thought BL combined lecture with labs, ugh… Is it better to take these classes separate quarters or is it manageable (it’s possible to get an A without stressing out ALL the time) to take both in one quarter along with Math3a and some obscure G.E to get out of the way. Also, I’m still curious about this “getting away from the premeds by doing chem 14B fall quarter” idea if anyone has the answer :)

I took 20B and 20L (the 20-30 series equivalent) last quarter, plus a GE cluster and an English class, and that wasn’t too bad. A lot depends (obviously) on your previous chem background and your professor and all that, but if you put the time and effort into it, I can’t imagine it’d be too bad.

As for the “getting away from premeds” thing, I’m inclined to say that THEY’RE EVERYWHERE. Hahaha. But seriously, I highly doubt it would make that much of a difference.

14BL is offered every quarter, but you would need to take 14B at the same time or before (and they don’t offer that fall quarter). And chemistry labs professors say they don’t curve the classes, so the pre-med thing shouldn’t matter too much.

Are you sure, because that’s ridiculous, 14B should also be offered all year round… Now I won’t be able to finish Chemistry by Freshman year, what a ****** move by UCLA.

They don’t offer 14B fall quarter since they expect people to be taking 14A at that time.

Lab classes are intense, so its a bad idea anyways to take it during fall quarter freshman year.

You’re not supposed to finish chemistry by the end of your freshman year. I’m almost done with my second year and I’m still not finished…and it isn’t a big deal. Its actually better take most of the chem classes during sophomore/early junior year since everything you learned will still be fresh in your mind when you take the mcat

There’s no such thing as avoiding pre-meds at UCLA. You’ll always have to deal with them here…its just the nature of the school so stop trying to run away from it. The curves usually aren’t that different from one quarter to the next

Relax. You haven’t even started college yet. And to be honest, taking chem 14A over the summer seems kind of pointless
