I always thought anything can be a good EC, as long as you're passionate about it.

However, I was browsing through some of the Chance Me threads and etc., and I saw that of the people who had chess club or the likes on there, many of them had put in brackets that they joined because there was no other choice and made it seem like colleges don't really appreciate these kind of clubs.

The way how some people on CC think research and etc. > filer clubs like chess makes me feel that I shouldn't even put it down or write an essay on it...

So basically can you guys tell me if chess is a filler club or not and whether it is frowned upon by colleges or not?

It’s a “filler club” if you do nothing after joining. If you put in a good amount of time, have entered tournaments, etc; it is not. Any club or position can be “filler” if there’s no effort behind it. Likewise, any club or position with effort is not.

Of course not; use common sense. And if you are able to display intense interest in the activity on your application, that can only help.

I guess it’s not a filler club for me then. I have played chess for a long time (not always western chess) and have participated in various tournaments in the first year of the club.

Now I’m just worried that I don’t seem to show enough interest in chess because I have only recently participated in tournaments… I wonder if colleges will be impressed that I’m really passionate about the “chess” from my own country as well
