Is Colby a good place to be for an aspiring writer/novelist/journalist?

I aspire to work in the New Yorker/Vanity Fair or in a big publishing house in New York as I write a TV script or a novel. Will Colby be a good step on my way to my inspiration?

Yes, the English and Cinema Studies departments are great

Robert B Parker was a Colby graduate. Nuff said.

Yes - as a liberal arts school, Colby places a huge amount of emphasis not only on the natural sciences, but also social science and humanities. Incoming freshmen are require to take a diverse selection of courses during their first few years, including literature. Students here reflect a wide range of interests and majors, but perhaps one of the more prominent is literature and english, with some choosing to major or minor in areas like philosophy or global studies as well. For whatever your chosen subject within the realm of writing and reporting, Colby has the resources and a staff willing and ready to get you there.

Take a look at some of the English department faculty – Colby students have some excellent mentors if they wish to write. And, as kcfitge says, writing skills are honed by study in all Colby’s majors. I graduated (long ago) with a Government and Economics double major and am a professional writer (magazine features, mostly) today.

My friend started this year and she really enjoys it!
