I applied to UC San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Berkeley. I only applied to the last 3 because of parental pressure, they really don't offer any programs that I am interested in pursuing. I applied to UCSD, hoping I would get in, but knew that my chances were pretty low. I figured that if I didn't get in, I could always do community, work my butt off, and hopefully transfer there or to some other schools that I've found some interest in (I didn't apply to those places because they are out of state and far away from my hometown, I'm not ready to be so far away yet). I got into Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara, but not UCSD. I really don't want to go to those schools, I'd much rather do community then transfer somewhere I really like. But now my parents are really pressuring me to attend either of those schools and if I end up not finding something I like there after two years I could always transfer out.
So long story short, is it a good idea to attend a UC I'm not interested in for two years and just transfer out, or should I get my first two years done at community college? My parents are moving overseas, so community college would include living in an apartment on my own or with a friend (which actually ends up being cheaper than a dorm). My dad insists that attending a UC is a better choice, I've just always thought it wouldn't be. Thanks! And sorry this is so long.

Personally, I see that you’re set on transferring and if that’s how it is then go to community college and then transfer to a UC in the future. By always having that mindset of transferring, you’ll never come to appreciate the school fully (at least that’s how I see it).

Although, have you visited UCSB or UCSC yet? You may find that you actually like the places better than you thought along with the programs it offers to you!

I hope I helped a little bit.

Money is a concern, and your parents are pressuring you to take the more expensive option. Are they going to be paying?

A UC school is usually always a good bet, but if youre just planning on transferring, it almost seems like a waste of money to go there instead of a community college.

What major(s) are you considering?

You and your parents should carefully consider the implications of them moving out of California for the purpose of determining residency for tuition purposes as a UC frosh and continuing, as a CC student, and as a UC junior transfer after they are no longer in California.
