is CS at umd an LEP?

I was vacillating on whether i wanted to do engineering or cs…

admission is hard at clark, and i wanted to know whether CS is an LEP at UMD.

Nope, CompSci is not a LEP

Oh, and fwiw, it’s not admission to engineering that’s hard; it’s just competitive.
It’s the engineering coursework that’s hard.

how does getting a major in comp sci work then?

When you apply, you select it on the application. It lists choices. The most important thing to know about applying is to make sure you apply by Nov 1 priority deadline. It gives you the best chance for admission and is the only way to make you eligible for merit $ and special program invites.

can i apply to clark engineering if i do get accepted, can i change my mind and do computer science

Of course you can change.

FYI, just to be clear, when I said getting into engineering isn’t hard, I meant it’s not hard relative to the coursework once you do get in. Competitive does mean it’s not easy by any stretch. It is hard to get the stats required to be competitive for admission. However, if those stats are not a problem for you, admission doesn’t seem as hard compared to the challenge of classes (since admission is a one-time goal versus sustaining that level of intensity of studies for 8 semesters).

@maryversity if you state on your application that you are applying as computer science, is it harder to get admitted?

No. Actually, the minimum stats are the same regardless of the major you select. Your application is reviewed for general admission to the university first (and your best shot is if you apply by Nov 1) If you happen to be applying to a LEP, then your application (after the university accepts you for general admission) is reviewed by the LEP college/department. So, for CompSci it’s just a single review since it’s not a LEP. However, if you applied to engineering (which is a LEP) then it gets reviewed a second time and they have different things they look for - typically the average stats are significantly higher for LEP majors. So, for LEP applicants, it is possible to be admitted to the university but not admitted to the major.

ah i see… i think i have changed my mind and will decide to apply as comp sci… some students who go to umd came to my school and talked about cybersecurity, which intrigued me.

maryversity you are truly a great help
