Is deferred like an early waitlist?

Anyone checked the status page lately and noticed a change? Wondering if they look at all of the new apps first and pick who is admitted and then go back and look at deferred? Or do they mix them all in and give them equal attention. Cause if they wait till the end then it is like being put on the waitlist during early notification and it makes you wish you had waited and applied rd.

I noticed my d's status page was updated today----don't know what it means

From last year's posts it looks like the same thing began to happen last year about this time. I imagine they screen the RD ones first to weed out the obvious choices, pro and con. They know what range the deferred are in and they probably then compare them to the RD people in the same range. That's just my guess, so feel free to add if you know.

yea i just checked my UNC home page and the link to the letter saying i had been deferred is gone. however, my "check status" says the last time they looked at it was 12/11/07 so thats hasnt changed.

interesting, my b's says 12/10 but the deferred letter is gone. But his updated sat score are not there? so do you think they cleared out all the info regarding deferred so they could start all over again or are the apps still in the "maybe" box?

My deferred link is gone, but it does say last updated: 02/27/2008 01:03:47 PM...which is like a few hours ago lol.

carnut: if your bro's updated scores aren't there, he should get in contact with their office immediately. All updated scores should be visible.

thanks. ill call my mom.

ok, now the cliffhanger is this....if the date has not changed, is the good cause they are still considering you and you have not been denied yet or does it mean you were not good enough to go to the accepted right away?

carnut: My guess would be that a decision has simply not been made yet. I don't think it's necessarily good or bad, they are probably just updating profiles as they make a decision.

They look at the RD applicants first and then compare the deferred applicants to that pool.

I've heard rumors that they started looking at the deferred applicants this past weekend and we should be receiving notification as early as next Wednesday. But they usually notify on Fridays... so maybe we'll receive it this Friday?

The office won't confirm or deny any of this but I know I called about my application yesterday and the lady could not help me with it because it was "with the admissions committee at the moment."

So are you saying EA applicants who were deferred will hear earlier than RD applicants? Like beginning in the next few weeks?

Also, anyone know if deferred students are given a decision online or by mail?

my mom called this am and they had not received the new sat scores and my b is so worried that they have already decided on his app and never saw the new scores.

ok, my whole family is now freaking out cause of the mix up. my b is in his counselors office right now going crazy cause he jumped up 90 point on his sat and will flip if they didnt see it! any suggestions from anyone on how to handle this?

carnut: sorry about the mixup! UNC did not receive my scores a few months after I sent them either, though we fixed it well in time for review.

The only thing I can suggest is to call UNC and ask them if they had made a decision, and if they can re-consider the app once you re-send the scores. Either way, your B probably should have been more aware and checked his status earlier. That's kinda on him, not UNC. Good Luck!

that was kind of rude vc08. he checks it everyday but how was he to know that they would have posted it. makes sense to think that since the page was the same as it was on Jan.1 that they would not necessarily post any new scores. it is great that you know all of this but some guys don't spend as much time as you do checking it i guess.

hs counselor has called and the decision has been made already and all if fine.

Not rude, just basic application knowledge. You send in your scores, probably in January. If, by a month later they aren't posted, you would think one would consider calling the school to ask if they were received. Even if they don't post them, like UVA, for example, a simple phone call and a "Hello, I'm John Doe and was wondering if you'd received my December SATs" would do. Pretty simple. I realize he didn't think they would update scores, but it even says it on their website!

hey... def call them... i sent in my SAT scores really early followed by my ACT scores (this was for the original app) and honestly like a month and a half later they still hadnt showed up. I called them and they said they hadnt received them yet but to fax them a copy of my score reports... miraculously the scores turned up the next day BEFORE i faxed them the info... funny how that works out

ky: I think the problem was that carnut's scores didn't show up, and a decision had already been made. Glad yours worked out though!

i also almost freaked cuz on the status check it said 02/28/2008 03:50:09 PM

then it had a link for my decision but it was still the same letter. however, my old address was on the letter and on file but i def. changed it online on Feb 1. and i checked a week later to make sure, and it was my new address. they are confusing me.

oh and it does say at the bottom

This online notification is provided as a courtesy to our applicants. Official decisions are mailed to all applicants by US mail. If you do not receive your official letter within two weeks, please notify the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at uncreply@admissions.unc.edu.

for those who wondered if it would be online for deferred or not.

so does anyone have any idea when we are going to find out if we are in. I was deferred and the last two months have been tough waiting
