Ive heard reports of him not making the trip to Michigan. I also heard he is going to Northern Illinois?

Anyone know?

I just heard the same thing on ESPN--they called it internet chatter as they did not offer confirmation.

I just saw this... not a lot of info, but something...

He is transferring to Northern Illinois. http://www3.niu.edu/cgi-bin/ph/qi.niu.edu?Query=demetrius+jones

WOW, Irish... I'm impressed!! Have you considered changing careers?... Private Investigation seems right!

Thats a shame.

You know, if he sincerely just wants to play, (and I suppose that's somewhat understandable) then he owed his coach and the University that gave him a free education the courtesy of notice. How shameful to leave your team waiting and looking for you...worrying about where you where! He has no class.

he is in my intro to jazz class, and i am almost positive he was in class on friday which is really weird because the bus left right after that class... maybe i got him mixed up with someone else because there's so many football players in that class (it's supposedly the easiest fine arts class you can take lol)

No class? He came in being promised of being the Quarterback of the future. He waits a year behind Brady Quinn to only hear that they recruited the top QB the year after. After one FULL quarter of being the starting quarterback for Notre Dame (and, mind you, not getting more than two opportunities to pass the ball), Jimmy Clausen is named as the starting quarterback for the rest of the season; and, presumably the rest of DJones's career. I cannot understand anyone in his exact situation who would not be looking to transfer.

Because you simply cannot bank on being recruited but you CAN bank on the benefits of a degree from Notre Dame.

No Class? Yes, that's right, no class. Citricacid, I completely agree with what you said regarding his probable disappointment with how it's all going...My contention is that when he knew that he was leaving, he owed his team, if not anyone on the coaching staff or involved in the University, an explanation. To leave your team waiting for you and worrying about you is disgraceful~surely not the hallmark of a Notre Dame man. He is, in my opinion, an immature, class-less boy.

It isn't that he transferred...that is understandable. It is how he transferred.

Sounds to me like he panicked.

I'd like to think most kids are raised better than to have done it the way he did.

He owed his team less than his team had owed him. NOBODY mentioned Demetrius Jones until he transferred. Have you ever listened to him give an interview? He is a mature individual ready to play football. Being recruited as the starting quarterback of the future only to be tossed aside by his team is far worse of an insult than having the backup quarterback leave early in the season so he can play next year (this year will be his year off). I think you need to consider how his team treated him and tossed him aside as used goods without even a fair chance before you can fairly judge him.

Is he in it ONLY to play football or to get the best education possible (free at that?)? I am not going to even begin to wonder who did what to who, first or what the polite way of handling this might have been for both sides. But, I do have to wonder, does he want the best education or an op to play pro sports (which more playing time might offer)? In my play book, does education matter at all? I hope he has not made a hasty decision that he will regret later!

I do not think we have all the facts of who said what to whom. Charlie Weis, as a former Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells assistant, says only as much as he needs to say. The quotes I saw from him did not say that he was not told, he said that he is not on the bus and that the reporter would have to ask Demetrius.

Demetrius came to ND with certain assumptions, one of which was that he would get a fair shot at playing quarterback for a Division 1-A program. Based upon this article in ESPN:

it looks like he felt like he wasn't being told the whole truth and that he needed to leave to pursue his dream. When you are behind a freshman on the depth chart his prospects did not look good. These are hard decisions and I do not think we know enough to say that he acted inappropriately.

From what I have seen since he was replaced, he did no worse than Clausen. Unfortunately for the Irish this year they have more issues than Demetrius Jones of Jimmy Clausen. With a better recruiting class coming it there is hope for next year, thus perhaps another reason to go with Clausen now and let Demetrius go to a program that suits him.

For what it is worth, one of the feature running backs at USC left for Florida. This is not unusual as prospect look for their chance to play.

I totally agree Eagle.

I say we wait to pass judgment until all the facts are released about his transferring.

Noone simply knows the situation that many of these players face. Maurice Clarett, Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, Reggie Bush, Vince Young, the list goes on. These players come from more poor backgrounds, and easily, the fastest track to have money to provide for themselves, their family, and to the people around them is in the NFL. They have an intense pressure to succeed and move on in football, which is the path Demetrius Jones, his family and the pressue from those around him was obviously greater than his desire to play behind a true Freshman after he was not even given the chance to start.

Believe me, I want to give him the benefit of the doubt too. And, I have never said that I didn't understand his motivation for transfering. It is totally understandable that he would want to try the "greener pasture", follow his dream, whatever. My only point is that there was a better way to handle it and he didn't choose it. He owed the people around him an explanation, pure and simple. He owed the University, the coaching staff and his team and he didn't come through. He has a lot to learn...

Irishcali:

Here is what was on ESPN about him leaving:
On Friday, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis confirmed that Jones did not make the team's bus trip to Michigan.

"I have not spoken to Demetrius and can only say that he missed the team bus. Any additional comment would be without all the facts," Weis said in a statement.
This statement by Weis does not say that Demetrius did not talk to others members of the team, the QB coach or other officials informing them of his decision.

Then why did the bus wait for him? Why did they send people to check his room? And, ask his current roommate where he was? (to which the room mate said he didn't know!) Somehow he didn't make sure to let the proper people know what was up, and again left his own team waiting and waiting instead of getting on the road to Michigan...disgraceful.
