Is demonstrated interest (aka touring the school and meeting with an admissions counselor) weighted in admissions? I live far from the school and it is difficult for me to tour the school. I would definitely tour if I was accepted, though, but I don’t want to lower my chances of getting in just because I didn’t tour before I applied. Thanks!
According to Michigan’s common data set, the level of an applicant’s interest is marked as “considered” rather than important. There are also ways to show interest other than touring. I don’t think they expect every student to do a campus visit.

Yes, Michigan admits that demonstrated interest matters.
Thank you so much this is so helpful!
It is considered, provided that you have demonstrated academic competency. If you do not have the academic competency, then your application goes in the trash before any other aspect is considered.
@umcoe16 with that said, no one has been rejected off the bat. Not a single post of getting Rejection so far.
@Lurdes777 the reason for that is because most people who are very certain they won’t make it past the numbers screening don’t even bother to apply.
@umcoe16 I dont think so. Among thousands of applications I am sure there are many that do not qualify academically. They just dont send rejections the first wave, thats what it seems like to me.
@Lurdes777 in that case, of course they’re not going to make it obvious that they do that. They will wait set the application aside before sending a rejection.
And I’m going to argue that most people who do not qualify academically won’t bother to apply because the application fee is not cheap. Back in my day, an admissions representative says they consider academic competency to be a 3.6+ GPA and 26+ ACT. So even if you are outside of the middle 50%, you can still be academically qualified. There will just be other stronger applicants that make the process more competitive.

Michigan admissions posted this. It’s how they evaluate you as an applicant. The bottom box has a place for demonstrated interest. So yes, it’s definitely considered.
