Is Duke Literature a thing?

Hello,

I recently was browsing the Duke majors list and I did not find a literature major. Does one even exist at Duke?

On the literature program site, it says there’s an undergrad major. But it may technically fit under the English Dept as there is no literature “department”, just a “program.”

@bluedog that page is actually for the global cultural studies program.

It looks like there are literary studies courses in both GCS and the English department but no literature major (for what it’s worth, most schools don’t have a literature major, as that’s usually considered a specialization of an English major. You’d take that focus in grad school).

@daywave Literature written in English will fall under the Dept of English. The GCS would also have literature written in other languages (note the Latinx lit courses). https://english.duke.edu/undergraduate/major

i see. thanks @guineagirl96 @ProfessorMom1

GCS was the literature major until it changed names in 2013. The subject matter hasn’t really changed, even if the name has.

This. It’s the distinction between English and Comparative Lit that you’ll find at most major universities. The other distinction is the Lit program tends to be noticeably more politicized and places emphasis on non-text mediums as well (particularly film).

@warblersrule thanks that makes a lot of sense
