Just wondering if Fordham has a strong economics program. The strength of their programs does seem to vary widely between departments. If anyone here has taken econ courses at Fordham or knows their reputation, what would you say about it?
First, in one sense it doesnt really matter what your major is for getting into grad schools, professional schools and for most jobs.
Economics is not Fordham’s forte. But there are some good courses and professors. If you want to become a professional economist then its more important where you go to graduate school…as that is the ticket to a bright future. But its a very crowded field…
Fordham has other majors that dovetail and cover economics fairly well…and some are stellar, like International Politcal Economy. Multi disciplinary programs are good because you cover a lot of territory and are well prepared.
And of course, the core is designed to introduce you to majors, departments and faculty…and choose from what lights your fire then. My kid went in with one idea and came out with another.
The Fordham experience is about a superb well balanced, broad education with Jesuit ethos. Then using that as a springboard, through mentors, to outstanding opportunities in the business world or graduate school. In that sense, its superb. Fordham faculty have great contacts and become good recommendations. In the end, its your grades that matter most for getting jobs.
I wouldnt choose or not choose Fordham based on one smallish program strength. I would choose Fordham for the overall experience and opportunities for internships and jobs.
Plus many kids either double major or pick minors that are something of interest…you dont have to find something “overly practical and pragmatic” all the time. That is a wive’s tail. Bad grades in any department are a recipe for being unemployed. Good grades are a recipe for wonderful opportunities.
Its okay to pick Philosophy and Theology…strong programs. And those kids get hired too!
